Lotta Depth by Mr Depth Charge by Depth Charge. This gives Sticky N Picky a breeding pattern of 4 X 4 to Depth Charge, which reinforces his influence on the pedigree and that influence is channeled by returning his blood back to KVN Corona through the dam of his sire, Corona Cartel.
The Quarter Horse world is so lucky that Depth Charge failed to win at the 1 1/4-mile distance. He was bred to do that, but it was his speed and his inability to carry that speed over a distance that sent him our way. He is a source of speed that found its way into his foals, especially through those Thoroughbred daughters in our look at the legacy of Depth Charge as a sire.
Shenoshercorona is the dam of Favorite Cartel by Favorite Trick. Favorite Cartel is
a winner of 3 stakes including the AQHA Championship Challenge-G1. He is the sire
of horses like Golden State Million Futurity winners Lotta Blues Man and Little Talks. Little Talks is out of Babe On The Fly, who goes to Baloma by Depth Charge from the Woven Web family of runners. That shows that both her sire and dam trace in the tail female line to a Thoroughbred daughter of Depth Charge.
AQHA Hall of Fame Breeder Spencer Childers bred some great horses over the years through his great foundation mare Black Easter Bunny. Childers stood several stallions with direct ties to Depth Charge in his breeding program, including Fast Jet, Ettabo and Tiny Charger.
Tiny Charger, by Depth Charge, was bred by the Vessels Stallion Farm and he raced under the Vessels’ Western Stable
and was trained by Earl K. Holmes. He earned $73,356 winning the Bay Meadow Inaugural, Hollywood Handicap, and Los Alamitos Inaugural. He sired 398 ROM, 25 stakes winners and two World Champions with earners over $3.9 million. His leading money earner is World Champion/8-time Champion Charger Bar. The daughters of Tiny Charger produced foals that earned over $11.2 million, including 60 stakes winners. The leading money earner is 1985 Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding Solvency.
1969 Champion Aged Stallion Ettabo
is sired by Deep Sun, a Thoroughbred son
of Depth Charge that was bred by Quincy Farms. He won 3 stakes, including the Josie Bar Handicap, Chicado V Handicap, and Vandy’s Flash. He sired 264 ROM and 18 stakes winners. His leading money earner
is 1980 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Ettago Chickie. The Ettabo daughters produced runners that won over $7 million that include 36 stakes winners. The leading money earner is 1988 and 1989 Champion Aged Gelding Chingaderos by Beduino, giving him a breeding pattern of 4x4 to Depth Charge.
To fully appreciate the influence of Depth Charge on the Spencer Childers breeding program, let’s look at his 2004 World Champion Be A Bono. This 2001 gelding is by Bono Jazz by Jazzing Hi by Merridoc. Merridoc is out of Sparkling Tip by Diamond Charge, whose dam is Lovely Lupita by Depth Charge.
The dam of Bono Jazz is Pro Bono by Summum Bonum, who is out of Stoa Minga by Azure Te and Stoa Minga was out of Triple Depth. Triple Depth is out of Depth O by Depth Charge. The Azure Te/Depth Charge cross makes Stoa Minga double bred
to Quickly with a breeding pattern of 4 X
4. The dam of Pro Bono is Rare Clover by Ettabo. The dam of Rare Clover is Rare View by Tiny Charger.
The dam of Be A Bono is Be Peaceful
by Raise A Secret. The dam of Be Peaceful is Serenidad by Sir Rambler by Ettabo
and she is out of Keynesian who is out of Oneforthemoney by Tiny Charger. This gives Be A Bono a breeding pattern of 7 X 7 X 6 X 6 X 6 X 6 to Depth Charge.
Spencer Childers didn’t keep them all.
He bred and sold a mare named AB Initio, who was later bred to First Installment to get Breezy Barrister, a race winner in 3 of her 11 starts that include a second place finish in the Miss Betty Stakes and a third in the Sequoyah County Juvenile. Breezy Barrister is the dam of 6 starters and 5 ROM, including Mt Pleasant Meadows Budweiser Futurity-G3 and West Texas Marathon-G3 winner Stamps One, who was sired by Beat The Feet TB.
First Installment, the sire of Breezy Barrister, is by Beduino TB and out of I Owe You Me by Merridoc. Beduino’s second dam is Quick Eye, by Depth Charge. The sire
of AB Initio, the dam of Breezy Barrister, is Summum Bonum out of Stoa Minga. The dam of AB Initio is Silver Sable out of Lady Winsmore by Tiny Charger by Depth Charge. This gives Breezy Barrister a breeding pattern of 5 X 7 X 6 X 6 to Depth Charge.
Returning The Blood
When KVN Corona hit the winner’s circle in the 2017 Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity, he brought the cross of Depth Charge and Azure Te into focus with an interesting “return the blood” pattern.
KVN Corona is a son of Corona Cartel, the #1 AQHA Leading Living Sire of Money Earners. The dam of Corona Cartel is Corona Chick by Chicks Beduino by Beduino TB. The dam of Corona Chick
is Sizzling Lil by Sizzle Te by Azure Te TB, giving his pedigree its first cross to the Depth Charge and Azure Te nick.
The dam of KVN Corona is Manor Downs Futurity-G1 winner Executive Looks, by Executive Menace by Chicks Beduino by Beduino TB. The dam of Executive Menace is Promised Memories out of Miss Azudash and her dam is Azure Teen by Azure Te.
This is the base “returning the blood” cross utilizing the Depth Charge/Azure Te nick, but we can add more.
The dam of Executive Looks is First Down Dash Stakes winner Sticky N Picky by Sticks An Stones, who is out of Hop Skip And Jump by Tiny Charger. The dam of Sticky N Picky is Staunch N Sassy, out of
                   2004 World Champion Be A Bono, from the Spencer Childers breeding program, has a 7 X 7 X 6 X 6 X 6 X 6 breeding pattern to Depth Charge.
KVN Corona, the undefeated winner of the 2017 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1, has a return the blood cross to
Depth Charge with the Depth Charge/Azure Te nick.
