Breathing unassisted is hard work for a quad-
riplegic, Tracey said. “After months of atrophy, you just got to rebuild that muscle. Him work- ing on trying to breathe for himself, he’ll break a sweat as if you or I were doing physical labor outside. It’s very, very hard.” But he wants to do it, because he’s determined to get stronger so he can be a candidate for surgery that would relieve pressure on his spinal cord. “In a perfect world, when you relieve the pressure, everything would work again,” Tracey said.

Canterbury Hosts Extreme Camel, Ostrich Races
Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota, on July 21 hosted extreme camel and ostrich races. Over 16,000 patrons watched as first- time ostrich rider Derek Bell rode Wally The Birdman to victory in the Don’t Lay An Egg Dash. Bell won by hanging on to the ostrich while two of his other competitors were unable to do so. Bell stated riding an ostrich was, “like riding a chicken, a big souped-up chicken.” And, in the camel race, Shakopee mayor Brad Tabke blew away the competition aboard Mayor Camelot in part by just running a straight line down the track. Track announcer Paul Allen made the exhibition races even more festive as he called parts of the race after breathing from a helium balloon.
