Rocky Mountain Futurity
BUILT TUFF ENOUGH
by John Moorehouse
If there’s another Quarter Horse at Arapahoe Park capable of defeating Built Tuff Enough, he or she has yet to reveal themselves. The
young colt continues to roll right along
for owners Rudy Ramirez and Larry and Michelle Rice. In his latest out, Built Tuff Enough added black type to his resume with an impressive run to victory in the $109,355 Rocky Mountain Futurity on July 15 at Arapahoe Park.
Built Tuff Enough now boasts three wins in as many outs, and the $43,742 first- place prize was more than seven times greater than his previous career earnings, boosting his lifetime coffers to a new total of $50,522.
Rudy Ramirez also trains Built Tuff Enough, whose :17.771 time in the futurity trials was good enough to claim the fourth spot on the
qualifying ladder. When it came time to run the stakes final, however, there clearly was
no horse quicker than this colt. Built Tuff Enough burst from the No. 3 gate with the early lead, surged to a slight separation over his closest contender, Carters Playmate, and main- tained his advantage all the way to the finish line to lead at every call of the 350-yard com- petition. Jockey Elliot Bachicha Jr. was aboard
as Built Tuff Enough covered the distance in :17.753.
James E. Helzer bred Built Tuff Enough, who
was foaled in Texas and is from the first crop of the Thoroughbred mare Inomuff. A stakes-placed winner, Inomuff is from the family
of multiple stakes winner Nine Keys ($637,320) and Grade 1 winner Silver Voice (279,694). Helzer sold Built Tuff Enough for $11,500 at
the 2011 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Carters Playmate (Carters Cartel-A
Streakin Mate), the even-money betting favorite, finished second for Junior’s Quarter Horses, Inc. Trainer Chris Gandarilla did the prep work and Russell Vicchrilli drew the rid- ing assignment. Wanna Be Ivory (Ivory James- Just Wanna Be Me) placed third for owners Vaughn and Jill Cook. John Hammes is the trainer and Vince Guerra was aboard.
The remaining order of finish was Oceans Of Bliss (Ocean Runaway-Bits Of Bliss), One Fancy Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Fancys First Affair), Eye For Azoom (Azoom-Eye For The Sixes), Fit For Glory (Ivory James-Ima Perry Girl), Ramblin Mountain (Panther Mountain- Sheza Ramblin Too), Jess Makin Waves (Wave Carver-Jess Genuine) and Ivory Jones (Ivory James-Bac By Design).

RACING NEWS
Rocky Mountain Derby
BLOCK N TACKLE
by John Moorehouse
One word best summarizes Block N Tackle’s racing career to date: con- sistency. Ralph and Carolyn Fales’ gelding
reached the winner’s circle for the seventh time in nine outs, enjoying a trouble-free run through the $76,750 Rocky Mountain Derby held July 14 at Arapahoe Park. Block N Tackle already has logged three stakes victories, and has finished in the money in every one of his first nine starts.
Drawing the outside position in the 10-horse field paid immediate dividends for Block N Tackle. While he broke sharply at the front of the pack, he also avoided trouble on the inside, where fellow contender Baby I Like It stumbled from the No.
5 gate. No such woes for Block N Tackle and jockey Tony Guymon, who made a beeline straight for the finish
line. The Fales’ gelding was never chal- lenged while winning by a commanding 1 1/2-length margin.
Matthew Fales trains and bred Block
N Tackle, who finished the 350-yard race in :17.497—his best-ever time at that distance— and registered a 96 speed index. The victory reaped a $30,700 payday that improved Block N Tackle’s total earnings to $133,905.
Matthew Fales also owns Watchin The Rain, the dam of Block N Tackle. The 2000 mare won the AQRA Lassie Stakes at Yavapai. As a brood- mare, she’s produced five starters out of six foals. Block N Tackle is the only stakes winner, but half-brother Party Crashin is stakes-placed with two runner-ups and a third- place finish.
Duplicate Check (Corona Cartel-Check Her Twice)
nosed out Baby I Like It for runner-up honors. Lisa Beauprez, Thomas Bradbury and Thomas Bradbury Jr. own Duplicate Check, a John Hammes trainee ridden by Vince Guerra. Baby I Like It (Ivory James-Baby La Jolla) made a fantastic recovery after falling at the start to hit the board in third. Hugo Barron Sierra is the owner and Jose Barron the trainer. Alejandro Luna drew the riding assignment as Baby I Like It lost at Arapahoe for the first time.
The remaining order of finish was Molten Maven (SLM Flashfire-Livorno), Kool Kue Country (Country Chicks Man-Jess A Kool Baby), DE Trubador (Separatist-Wagons Maiden), JMF Ryons Ocean (Ocean Runaway- Special Lady Ryon), Fast Prize Shiney (Shazoom- Fast Prize Doll), Top Gun B (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jet Along Jamie) and Cash This Panther (Panther Mountain-Phoebette).
