Southern Snow Declared Winner Of 2014 Speedhorse Lone Star P&A Futurity-G1
The 2012 sorrel overo Paint gelding Southern Snow (Southern Corona QH- Snow Warning) has been declared the winner of the 2014 Grade 1 Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity. The original third-place finisher, Southern Snow was moved to first after the disqualification of Cant Be Caught and Texas Silk from first and second respectively.
Funds for the $97,279 contest were on hold until recently due to challenges of drug positive or permitted medication violations on Cant Be Caught, Texas Silk and Mai Dashing Hero.
Southern Snow is bred and owned by Ronald M. Yates and was ridden in the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 by Ricky Ramirez. Southern Snow’s race record is now 3(1)-0-4(2) from nine career starts with $73,794 in earnings. The gelding also finished fourth in the 2015 Talimena Handicap and was a finalist in the 2014 Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1.
Last Racing Season at Northlands Park
Northlands Park in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, announced that the track would cease operations at the end of the 2016 racing season. Horse racing began in Alberta in 1905. In 2015, the track ran five official Quarter Horse stakes worth $136,821 (US).
Idaho Fails To Get Senate Hearing
On Feb. 23, a bill drafted by the Idaho Horsemen’s Coalition to allow the state’s tracks to reopen their historical racing terminals and establish a new regulatory arm to oversee all electronic gaming in Idaho failed to get a Senate hearing. The Idaho Constitution specifically permits pari-mutuel betting, like the pooled betting on horse races, but not if it involves “any electronic or electromechanical imitation or simulation of any form of casino gambling.”
Texas A&M Vet Varner Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Texas A&M veterinarian Dr. Dickson Varner was awarded the David E. Bartlett Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Theriogenology (SFT) and the American College of Theriogenologists (ACT). Dr. Varner is a professor & Pin Oak Stud Chair of Stallion Reproductive Studies in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences (CVM) at Texas A&M. The award honors Vaner’s work
in equine reproduction, which includes assisted reproduction, stallion fertility, and in-vitro pres- ervation of stallion sperm. He played a crucial role in starting the stallion reproductive studies program at the CVM, and his original research has helped position the CVM as one of the top research and clinical facilities for stallion repro- duction in the world. Dr. Varner will receive the award at the SFT/ACT annual conference this July in Asheville, North Carolina.
OSU Animal Science Unveils New Equine Center
Oklahoma State University unveiled its new Charles and Linda Cline Equine Teaching Center, which began with a generous contribution from Linda Cline of Char-Lin Ranch in honor of her late husband Charles and their passion and patronage for equine students. The facility has a teaching
barn, small indoor arena, classrooms, feed & tack rooms, a wash rack, and a treatment area. The
OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources honored the supporters that made the center a reality during center-dedication ceremonies on Feb. 16. Other supporters who made contribu- tions to the center include Shawnee Milling, Priefert, Cross Bar Gallery, Heritage Place, and Mel & Jackie Bollenbach. The new center will provide students and industry partners the opportunity to learn cutting-edge production and management practices, with the classroom and indoor arena allowing for hands-on activities any time of the year.
Brian Elmore Awarded Jockeys’ Guild Eddie Arcaro Award
Brian Elmore, a longtime member of the Centaur Gaming team, was awarded the annual Jockeys’ Guild Eddie Arcaro Award, which is presented to a person or group that consistently shows extraordinary commitment to the jockeys and the organization. Elmore initiated the second annual “Jockeys ‘N Jeans” fundraiser, which raised more than $200,000 for the PDJF (Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund). Elmore has been involved in horse racing for more than 4 decades, was instrumental in the opening of Hoosier Park Racing & Casino in the mid 1990s, and played an integral part in creating the the current racing pro- gram at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. Elmore also served as a member of the Thoroughbred Racing Association, and as vice president & general manager of Ellis Park in Henderson, Kentucky, and Bandera Downs in Bandera, Texas.
