young ones — get them to handle and use their bodies. He likes going from the beginning to the finished product.”
Rather than golf, boat or take vacations, he and Shalia go to horse or cattle sales. “It’s just our work,” he says. “Whatever it takes to get it done, that’s what we do.”
They do, however, find pleasure in spending time with their grandkids, although Marty’s usually the one to stay at home and care for the animals when needed.
And it’s that genuine love for the horses that has brought him to this point. “Marty’s like
a lot of us: He really, really likes outstanding, beautiful horses,” Royce says. “That’s something that draws you in in this industry: being with good horses — whether stallions or mares or babies, racehorses or whatever. Getting to sale prep them and what we call ‘ringing the bell’ — bringing a lot of money for our clients. It gives you that sense of pride, that boost.
“Marty’s one of those guys who’s well liked throughout the industry,” Royce adds. “He’s very knowledgeable, professional and one of the ‘good guys’. He tries to treat everybody the same with warmth and friendship and will go out of his way to try to help anybody. He’s just a really fine, outgoing guy.”
He’s a guy who’s followed his passion and created a life he loves.
