B Back in the late 1960s, Jesse Perry and his son, Leverne, traveled with Claude Boutte to look at yearlings at the 6666 Ranch in Guthrie, Texas. That trip sparked a lifetime of involvement in Quarter Horse racing for the Perrys, so it is only fitting that Champion Mr Jess Perry, a horse named after the elder Perry, has called 6666 Ranch home for the majority of his career as one of
the industry’s leading sires.
Mr Jess Perry’s story starts in Louisiana,
where Leverne Perry watched a lightning- fast runner named Magics Mighty Man earn $305,000. When the opportunity came up to buy a mare that was a half-sister to his dam, Leverne jumped at the chance. That mare was a young Sinn Fein daughter named Scoopie Fein. An unproved producer at the time, Leverne paid only $1,000 for the mare and gave her to his father as a gift.
Jesse Perry bred Scoopie Fein to Streakin La Jolla. The result was a colt born on Feb. 18, 1992...the day that Leverne buried his father. Jesse is listed as breeder of the colt that Leverne named in his honor— Mr Jess Perry. A market breeder, Leverne sent Mr Jess Perry to the LQHBA Yearling Sale the following year, where he brought a final bid of $16,500 from Elliott Clark.
Clark sent the colt to trainer John Brasseaux, who managed Mr Jess Perry’s career. As a two-year-old, the colt won

four stakes races and set two track records, earning the titles of AQHA Champion Two- Year-Old and Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. He ran two more years, winning 12 of 21 starts and $687,184. Upon his retirement, he entered stud at Dr. Brad Boutte’s Pleasant Time Farm, whose neighbor was none other than Leverne Perry. When asked if he regretted selling the colt, Leverne responded that the only mistake he ever made was not breeding more mares to Mr Jess Perry when he stood right next door.
When Mr Jess Perry’s first crop hit the track, they made an impression—four horses set track records at four different tracks. It didn’t take long for the industry to notice the hot young sire from Louisiana. Mr Jess Perry was soon syndicated.
From 13 crops to race, the sorrel stallion has sired the earners of more than $38 million including five champions, 104 stakes winners, 118 stakes-placed runners, 607 winners and 765 ROM. He is annually among the leading sires of money earners and stakes winners, and is one of the all- time leading sires in Quarter Horse racing.
There can be no doubt that Mr Jess Perry’s legacy will live on through his sons and daughters, as he is already the broodmare sire of earners of nearly $15 million. He will also forever carry on the legacy of Jesse Perry as a fitting tribute to the forever love between a father and his son.
