Two-Year-Old Colt/Gelding
Mister Riptide
(Woodbridge-Ms Riptide, Ocean Runaway) Breeder: MJ Farms
Owner: Mark & Annette McCloy
8- 6(2)-1(1)-0, SI 99, $743,498
MJ Farms steps back into the program front and center with Mister Riptide. The gelding was foaled in New Mexico and, as his competitive skills developed, it became obvious that his talents matched the AQHA’s platform for champion designation.
Everybody’s familiar with the term “hard- knocking gelding” and Mister Riptide will probably grow into that epithet as he ages. For now, though, he didn’t need to knock too hard to wrap up $743,498. He did it in just eight starts and he didn’t shy away from tough open company on occasion. The best example of that point is the 2019, G1 All American Futurity where he finished second. The check was a healthy $450,000.
Mister Riptide proves that the MJ Farms people weren’t sniffing around the wrong
tree when they added Ms Riptide to their broodmare band. They bred Ms Riptide to their own Woodbridge, whose pedigree show- cases two of MJ’s biggest breeding program stars – Dash Ta Fame and Champagne Lane. Their decision to bring Ms Riptide aboard could result very easily in grafting yet another branch onto their already flourishing family breeding tree.

Two-Year-Old Filly
Honky Tonk Daddy
(Big Daddy Cartel-Jenna James, Jesse James Jr) Breeder: MJ Farms
Owner: US Alliance Logistics, LLC
10-3(1)-2-0, SI 95, $231,074
It’s frequently fascinating to view a pedigree as a roadmap and identify all the geography flowing together in a horse such as Honky Tonk Daddy.
Look at Corona Chick, way back there in the fourth group of boxes. She was a dainty-looking, 900-pound mare who became the scourge of Cali- fornia. She didn’t want to be broke and she thought her human connections would accept her wishes
if she put enough jockeys on the ground. But they persevered and she finally made it to Los Alamitos.
Always the smallest one to load, she ran as if
her tail were on fire. She didn’t just win. She beat everybody else into total submission. She eventually had a date with Holland Ease, a California guy who also knew how to turn some fancy footwork on
the track. The result was Corona Cartel, a stallion Butch Wise of Lazy E in Oklahoma moved into
a high-dollar syndication in less than 48-hours. That’s how hot the colt was when he came off the track. He remained hot throughout his breeding career and there wasn’t a syndicate member who resented that quick decision.
The names on the bottom of Honky Tonk Daddy’s pedigree are a round-about way of spelling MJ Farms, following their trail from Utah with Famous Chapelle all the way to New Mexico with Jesse James Jr and Wild Vines. And, of course, Big Daddy Cartel is an integral part of MJ’s battery.
Honky Tonk Daddy turned out to be special. As a matter of fact, she may be channeling a spark from her spitfire great-great-grandma (paternal) Corona Chick. On May 5 last year, Honky Tonk Daddy qued up for the RG2 New Mexican Spring Futurity at Sunland Park. It was 300-yards and the filly was in a hurry to get back to her stall. She won, while setting a New World Record.
Three-Year-Old Colt/Gelding
Ryansmanonthemoon
(First Moonflash-Girlonthego, Man On TheMove) Breeders/Owners: Jimmy Negrete &
Jimmy Vasquez
18-8(4)-3(1)-0, SI 106, $410,081
Talk about making the right decision! That’s precisely what Jimmy Negrete and Jimmy Vazquez did from start-to-finish with Ryansmanonthemoon.
First, the men took their mare to one of the best stallions to ever stand in New Mexico, First Moon- flash. The mare, Girlonthego, represented some of the top level names found at TNL Farms, which is also home for First Moonflash.
Negrete and Vazquez decided to keep the result- ing colt. Excellent choice.
The colt is put together tough and there may be some people who feel his connections have taken advantage of that toughness. But....anyway.... Don’t forget that term “hard-knocking gelding.”
In 2019, Ryansmanonthemoon saw the inside of 18 starting gates. He won eight of those, with four stakes. He made everybody proud on Febru- ary 16 in the RG2, 400-yard, New Mexico HBA Stakes at Sunland in a New Track Record time. In December, he brought home a huge pre-Christ- mas present when he collared $115,200 from his first place finish in the RG1, 440-yard Zia Park Championship. The gelding won his first out of 2020, adding another $60,000 to his earnings.
Ryansmanonthemoon has a total of $410,081, all from New Mexico tracks.
