  HOLLYN BOOTIE
Seventh-fastest qualifier and 15-1 longshot Hollyn Bootie, a homebred Big Daddy Cartel filly owned by Mark and Annette McCloy, broke her maiden in the July 26, $352,547 Zia Quarter Horse Futurity-RG1 for New Mexico- bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.
Ridden by Tanner Thedford for trainer Blane Wood, Hollyn Bootie went 400 yards in :19.856 on a sealed track labeled “good.” The gray filly earned $151,478 from her first win in three races.
“Once our filly broke, it was over,” said Wood. “She flew right down the racetrack and finished strong.”
Hollyn Bootie was named after Hollyn Mitchell, a granddaughter of the McCloys who celebrated her ninth birthday two days before the Zia Futurity. The filly’s sire, Big Daddy Cartel, is an 11-year-old winning son of the Holland Ease stallion Corona Cartel. Racing
at Ruidoso Downs in 2011, the stallion earned $121,800 from five outs and was a finalist in the Grade 1 All American and Rainbow futurities.
Big Daddy Cartel has sired the earners of more than $8.3 million from five crops, includ- ing multiple graded stakes winners Bigg Daddy, Cat Daddys Lil Girl, and Mamacita Cartel.
Hollyn Bootie’s dam, Datona Doll, is a 7-year-old daughter of the Mr Jess Perry
stallion Jesse James Jr who won the 2016 New Mexico Cup Derby-RG2 at Zia Park and was a finalist in that season’s Grade 2 Heritage Place Derby at Remington Park. The filly’s second dam, the winning Dean Miracle mare Maggies Miracle Lx, was a finalist in the ‘03 New Mexico State Fair Señorita Futurity-RG3 at Albuquerque Downs.
Hollyn Bootie was coming off of a second- place finish in the 10th of 11 Zia Futurity trials on July 10. The filly has earned $153,078, and she was being pointed to the August 21-22 All American Futurity-G1 trials.
”We’ll see how she comes out of this race, but she’s our best state-bred,” Wood said.
Thedford was riding Hollyn Bootie for the first time in a race.
”I worked this horse back on Blane’s ranch, and we all knew she could run,” said Thedford. “All she needed was a clean break, and that’s what she got today. She did all the work.”
Woodys Gold finished second, a half
of a length behind Hollyn Bootie. Vine Master, Fly On Down, Hatchi Zulu, fastest qualifier and 6-5 favorite Cristom, Ripp, and Jessies Allstar completed the official order of finish. Third-fastest qualifier Fanncee and 10th-fastest qualifier True Romance were scratched.
A $10,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Woodys Gold earned $64,919 for his owner, Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC. The sorrel Woodbridge geld- ing has won one of four outs and has banked $133,303, and his record includes a second- place finish, a neck behind winner Leading Cartel, in the June 13, $334,000 Mountain Top Futurity-RG2.
Vine Master races for Cody Cobb, who acquired the Jesse James Jr gelding for $34,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale. Vine Master has earned $70,866 from four starts, and his three wins included a half-length vic- tory in the 350-yard, $50,000 Mountain Top Juvenile Stakes (R) on June 13.
