Diagnosing Dental Problems
by Heather Smith Thomas
The teeth of a horse are crucial for proper eating/chewing and, therefore, are a big factor in whether the horse obtains adequate nutrition. Healthy teeth
are important for good health and fitness. Teeth also play a role in the performance
of an equine athlete. Tooth problems can lead to pain, which in turn can lead to
poor performance or behavioral problems. Sometimes, these may be subtle or not readily recognized as being linked to a
tooth problem, so it’s important to figure it out with proper diagnosis and treatment to address and correct the underlying issue.
Dr. Jack Easley of Easley Equine Dentistry in Shelbyville, Kentucky, says the most important part of dentistry is having a complete oral examination done before you simply have the teeth floated. “Diagnosing a dental problem is accomplished the same way you’d diagnose any other medical problem in the horse. You start by taking a good history to find out the problem the owner, trainer or rider is having with that horse.”
You also need a history on the horse, which should include general health, medical or surgical history, and a review of any other problems
such as nasal discharge or eating problems. Any number of things can be associated with pain or change in behavior which could point toward a possible dental problem.
