P. 8

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Members:
Hope everyone is having a good summer! This letter will be shorter than prior ones but
focused on two items – the possibility of a sixth racing license and the Zia weekend at Ruidoso.
The New Mexico Racing Commission issued a “request for proposals” with proposals due by the end of July. This request is the first step in the process of awarding a license for the sixth racing license. Currently, those entities who are interested in building and operating a new racino are preparing those proposals which will be evaluated by the commission designees. Because the commission is “fast-tracking” this process a license could be awarded before the end of the year.
We have heard that there may be as many as six proposals. Locations that have been mentioned include Tucumcari, Clovis and Raton. Each has their own strong points.
Stay tuned for this one.
Ruidoso Downs and the NM Horse Breeders have been planning for a big Zia Festival weekend for July 27-29. Along with all of the great racing,
EVENTS & DEADLINES:
there will be a Zia party and concert on Saturday evening. See information in this magazine
and plan to join us. The NMHBA Board will also continue the “Town Hall” discussions on Saturday morning (July 28th) at 10:00.
On a personal note, I have always been intrigued how people refer to time periods based on the passing of a parent. We have probably
all heard someone say “that was the summer my Dad passed away” or something like that. I now have a better appreciation of this marking of time as my Dad passed away on his 89th birthday this past month. He was always my good luck charm at the races because my horses always seemed to do something when he showed up.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and please do join us for Zia Festival.
Sincerely,
Ralph W. Vincent
