Robert H. “Bob” Daily, 69, passed away
after a long battle with cancer. Daily was a decorated Army veteran whose real passion in life was horses. After working as a cattleman, Daily became a trainer and breeder and had
a unique understanding of the personality and psychology of the horse. He was a long- standing member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

The 12th annual Velocidade Haras Prata & Convidados Horse Sale (Haras Prata & Guests Speed Sale) was held at the Jockey Club de Sorocaba in Sao Paulo, Brazil. 55 yearlings sold for nearly $6.5 million U.S. with an approximate sale average of more than $118,000 U.S. The top seller at over $507,000 U.S. was La Tuty (Shazoom-First Regards, First Place Dash), a 2-year-old filly consigned by Haras Prata and purchased by Haras Portofino.

Oklahoma State University held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new multimillion dollar Charles and Linda Cline Equine Teaching Center. The facility will include an indoor arena, a teaching barn with foaling center and watch room, feed and tack rooms, and wash rack and treatment area. The facility will also provide meeting space for classes, equine science and training lectures, clinics, and other outreach opportunities.

A federal appeals court overturned the 2013 conviction of trainer Eusevio Huitron for his alleged involvement in a money laundering conspiracy with members of the Mexican Zetas Cartel due to lack of evidence. Huitron trained Champion Tempting Dash.

The Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) approved a policy to sanction trainers with horses in violation of serum or blood plasma cobalt levels and to exclude them from competition. Trainers
of horses testing 50 ppb or higher of serum or blood plasma will be subject to a Class B penalty that includes a 15-day suspension, minimum $500 fine and four points on their Multiple Medication Violation record. Horse owners will lose purse money and be excluded from competition until a retest at owner’s expense proves levels are below 25 ppb. Horses that test at 25 ppb and below 50 ppb will be excluded from competition and placed on the Vet’s List until they test below 25 ppb.

Longtime leading jockey
and trainer Elbert Minchey of Boswell, Oklahoma, passed away at the age of 78. Minchey, the first jockey for Hall of Fame runner Easy Jet, rode the earners of more than $1.8 million.
2011 Speedhorse Co-Broodmare of the Year Precious Debutante (Heza Fast Man-Precious Libby, Liberty Jet Line), 18, died May 1, after suffering from colic. Precious Debutante won
two stakes races, earning a 107 career high speed index. She produced six stakes winners from nine starters, including 10-time stakes winner Fearles Fred, Grade 3 winner Ida Snow Man, stakes winners Fast Man Vic, Casey Corona, Mr Corona To You and Seiswho, and stakes-placed Code 36.
Chasin Firewater (Fire Water Flit-Has The Touch, Bugs Alive In 75) died from complications of a stifle injury he received at the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Chasin Firewater was a 2-time PHBA Barrel Racing World Champion and a PHBA Pole Bending Champion, earning over $20,000 in barrel competition. The 2001 palomino stallion was the sire of nearly $500,000 from four performance age crops. Bred by Vickie Adams, Chasin Firewater was owned by Dee Braman and stood at JB Quarter Horses in Refugio, Texas.
