WORLD CHAMPION GELDINGS
horse. Both of them were gelded because they were hard to handle. Even as a gelding, he was tough. But, that made the big difference. As a colt or stal- lion he would never have run as well as he did as a gelding,” Casner explains. “Gelding Funny Cide made a lot of difference in his attitude. Barclay Tagg even made him a racetrack pony after they retired him and Barclay would ride him out with the sets in the morning. He was a much better horse as a gelding than he would ever have been as a stallion.
“I’ve seen this happen a lot. There are a lot of great geldings, and it’s a shame that more stallions
aren’t gelded because many of them never achieve their potential as racehorses. The stallion will be 50 to 60 pounds heavier and most of that extra weight is on the front end where it is detrimental to a racehorse. You don’t want a big thick neck. You want a good, strong shoulder, but not a heavy shoulder.
“Some people point to Dash For Cash as an example of why they don’t want to cut a horse. His owner had him on the list to geld, and then he had a serious injury and they didn’t want to stress him by having the vet geld him when he came to treat the horse. They decided to geld
that horse later. They never did cut him, and the rest is history. He was a great racehorse and a great stallion. He came very close to going under the knife and many people think about that story and don’t want to cut their colt—thinking it will be another Dash For Cash. Yet, Dash For Cash would have been just as good a racehorse
if he’d been gelded, he just wouldn’t have been a sire.”
Many good horsemen realize that you will not negatively impact a horse’s performance by gelding him. “Chances are, you will improve it,” says Casner.
