LA CONEJA STAKES (R)
Making her first start in more than a year, Woodacouldadid outran her 34-1 odds to win the March 26, $100,000 La Coneja Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred distaffers at Sunland Park.
Woodacouldadid covered 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.65 under jockey Elvin Gonzalez, and the homebred 6-year-old mare’s winning margin was a half of a length from 8-5 favorite Diabolical Dame. Jose Gonzalez Jr. saddled Woodacouldadid for owner Terrine G. Ransier of Deming, New Mexico.
Woodacouldadid’s last start, in fact, was in the 2016 La Coneja Stakes, where the chestnut mare ran fifth, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner Tea Light.
“She had been training well, and this was a race we were pointing to,” said Gonzalez after the race. “She beat some great horses.”
Woodacouldadid is one of 40 winners from 71 starters sired by Minister Eric, a Kentucky-bred son of the A.P. Indy stallion Old Trieste. Racing in California and Kentucky from 2003-06, Minister Eric earned $562,771 from 13 outs, and his three wins included a half-length victory in the 1 1/16- mile, $200,000 San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park in ’05.
Minister Eric has sired four official black- type stakes winners and the earners of more
than $2.3 million. The stallion stood the 2015 season at Lake Star Stud in Kentucky. Woodacouldadid is one of two winners
from as many starters produced by Prospective Girl, an unraced 13-year-old unraced Kentucky-bred daughter of 1996 Canadian champion sprinter Langfuhr. Her second dam, Woodman’s Prospect,
is a winning daughter of Woodman and
a half sister to Windrush, the winner of the $109,800 Stymie Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct in ’01.
Woodacouldadid traces back to her third dam, the stakes-winning Storm Cat mare Tempest Dancer. A Kentucky-bred 1990 foal, Tempest Dancer was a full sister to Sardula,
a daughter of Storm Cat who won four graded stakes from 1993-94, including the 1993 Hollywood Starlet Stakes (G1) and ’94 Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs, and a half sister to Imperial Gesture, the winner of the 2002 Beldame Stakes (G1) and Gazelle Handicap (G1), both at Belmont Park.
Campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, Woodacouldadid has won seven of 22
outs, and the $60,000 winner’s share of the purse from her first career stakes score bumped her earnings to $179,218.
Woodacouldadid returned a $70.80 win mutuel and teamed with Diabolical Dame for a $2 exacta payoff of $486.60. Bryn’s Fancy Pants, the 17-10 second choice in
the field of nine, finished third, 1 3/4 lengths behind the winner, to complete an $878.10 ($1) trifecta.
My Bikini Fell Off, Indian Tiva, Tijuana, She Devil, Bloss, and Tilla Cat completed the order of finish.
Diabolical Dame races for Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant, and Derrol Hubbard, who acquired the 5-year-old daughter of
the Artax stallion Diabolical as a yearling
for $25,000 at the 2013 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Diabolical Dame has won 12 of 21 starts, and her seven stakes victories include two wins against open company. The $22,000 runner-up share of the La Coneja purse increased her bankroll to $518,980, of which $234,200 was earned during her sophomore season in 2015.
Bryn’s Fancy Pants is a homebred 4-year-old chestnut daughter of the
Gone West stallion Southwestern Heat. Campaigned by Dale Taylor, Carey Taylor, and Jon Hogg, the filly has banked $259,916 from 11 races, and her four stakes wins include last year’s open 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Petticoat Stakes at Albuquerque Downs.
