On The Low Down, a chestnut son
of Dome racing for Dale Taylor, Bobby McQueen and Suzanne Kirby, broke his maiden with a 1 1/4-length victory in the April 16, $147,196 Copper Top Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds at Sunland Park.
Ridden by Tracy Hebert for trainer Todd Fincher, On The Low Down covered 4 1/2 furlongs in :51.17. The $73,598 winner’s share of the purse increased the gelding’s earnings to $75,556 from two outs.
On The Low Down made his debut with a second-place finish in the second of three Copper Top trials on March 25. The gelding was bred by Brad King and Todd Fincher, and he became the seventh black-type stakes winner from 13 crops sired by Dome, an unraced 19-year-old son of the Storm Bird stallion Storm Cat and a half brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Dixie Union.
Dome entered stud in ’02, and he has sired the earners of more than $5.4 million from 176 starters, including multiple stakes winners Glory Be Mine, ZZ Dome, and Etoile de Dome. The stallion is owned by
Hardeman LLC and stands for a $2,500 fee at W.L. and Dee Mooring’s Double LL Farm at Bosque, New Mexico.
On The Low Down is also one of two winners from as many starters produced by Speedin Excess, an 11-year-old daughter of the Siberian Express stallion In Excess (IRE) who ran second in the 6-furlong, $122,050 Barretts Debutante Stakes (R) during the Los Angeles County Fair meet at Fairplex Park in 2008.
On The Low Down’s second dam, the Regal Classic mare Danish Dessert, is a half sister to two stakes winners: Ever Steady,
a four-time stakes winner at Woodbine Racecourse near Toronto and Exhibition Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, from 1989-90, and Sparrow Lake, a two-time stakes winner at Woodbine in 1988. The gelding traces back to his third dam, Stray Flight, a daughter of the Northern Dancer stallion Viceregal and a half sister to Cadet Corps, the winner of the ’81 Prince of Wales Stakes (R) at Fort Erie.
Sent to post at odds of 7-1 in the field of nine, On The Low Down returned a $16.20 win mutuel and teamed with 4-5 favorite Red Raider for a $2 exacta payoff
of $50.40. Storm The Beach, a 12-1 longshot, finished third, 1 3/4 lengths behind On The Low Down, to complete a $171.40 ($1) trifecta.
Happy Resources, Western Warning, Belly Button Who, Diabolical Empress, P J’s Gold, and Big Boom completed the order of finish. Tucker D was scratched.
Red Raider is a homebred son of the Hennessy stallion Roll Hennessy Roll racing for Brad King and Dale Taylor. The winner of the first Copper Top Futurity trial on March 25, the chestnut gelding has earned $34,779 from two outs.
Storm The Beach is campaigned by
J & SM Inc. of Fort Stockton, Texas, which acquired the gelded son of Attila’s Storm from breeders Tom and Leslie Goncharoff for $28,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Storm The Beach has won one of two outs and has banked $23,004.
