LETTER FROM THE 2ND VICE PRESIDENT
Dear Members,
As the year sale season approaches and the breeding season is being wrapped up, many of you are busy polishing up your yearlings for the upcoming sales. This is my favorite time of year because I love to see the yearlings transition from a cactus to a rose, and it is so good to get to the sales to see friends
we haven’t seen since the previous year. I wish everyone a successful sale.
Please be aware that there has been a format change on this year’s New Mexico Bred Sale. Thoroughbred Yearlings will sell first on Friday, August 18th, followed by the first 50 hips of Quarter Horse Yearlings. Saturday night will offer Quarter Horse Yearlings along with a Select Foal In-Utero sale. Both nights will offer a Stallion Service Auction, which benefits
the New Mexico Horse Breeders Association. There will be three Thoroughbred Stallions and Six Quarter Horse Stallions offered. The New Mexico Horse Breeders wish to express their gratitude to the owners of these stallions.
On July 29, 2017, there will be a regularly scheduled New Mexico Horse Breeders Association Board meeting to be
held at the Ruidoso Sales Pavilion at 9:00 a.m., followed by
an Industry Panel discussion at 10:00 am. Panel participants include Izzy Trejo, Director, New Mexico Racing Commission; Lowell Neumayer, General Manager, Ruidoso Horse Sales Company; and a partner from the prospective new ownership group which is in the process of buying Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Casino. This format is a great opportunity for our members to meet these leaders and gain knowledge about different areas of the racing industry in New Mexico.
Trustee Debra Laney and I attended an AQHA Affiliate meeting in Amarillo, Texas, on May 22 and 23, 2017. This was a very informational meeting for our members because New Mexico Horse Breeders Association is an Affiliate member
of the AQHA. All of our members are extended the same discounts that an AQHA member is afforded. Some of these companies which have some really nice discounts are Ford, John Deere, Smartpak, Montana Silversmiths, Office Depot, and Sherwin Williams. Even if you are not a member of the AQHA, but are a member of NMHBA, you qualify for these benefits. As an example, a NMHBA member who only has Thoroughbreds can participate. You can call Steven Driskill, Member Plus Program, AQHA, at (866) 678-4288/office or (918) 830-1906 and he will be able to assist you. The AQHA representative will contact our office to confirm membership in the NMHBA.
One of our Association’s biggest goals is to work together with all horse racing entities in New Mexico for a long-term plan which would ensure stable and mutually beneficial opportunities to all participants in our industry. We continue to see progress working towards this goal. We welcome your valuable input as we move forward.
Hope to see at our Summer Meeting. Yours,
Norma Alvarez
Quarter Horse Trustee, Second Vice President
