Rainbow Futurity-G1
A REVENANT
by Tracy Gantz
Owner R.D. Hubbard and trainer Michael Joiner have, together and separately,
had much success in the Quarter Horse
racing business. Yet, neither has won the All American Futurity-G1. Thus, it was especially gratifying to both when A Revenant captured the July 24 Rainbow Futurity-G1, the second of Ruidoso Downs’ major futurities and per- haps a precursor to the All American.
Hubbard owns A Revenant with Johnny Cope, Ray Willis/Rafter W Stables, and Henry “Butch” Southway. Joiner, who also qualified three others for the Rainbow final, trains the colt for the partners.
“The All American has been on his bucket list for a long time,” said Joiner of Hubbard.
A Revenant, ridden in each of his four starts by Cody Jensen, has demonstrated that he has natural ability. He was the fastest qualifier for the Rainbow from day one of the trials on July 8.
In the Rainbow finals, he battled with Paint My Pilot, who drew the rail and nearly hit it when he veered in early. A Revenant had a burst of speed at the end to grab the win by a neck. A Revenant completed the 400 yards in :19.708.
“He broke good,” said Joiner. “He always has a big, strong finish, and that’s where he won the race, the last 100 yards.”
Hubbard praised both Joiner and Jensen. “I
need to say that the jockey and the trainer did an out- standing job. It’s a great crew.”
Jensen was impressed with his mount’s tenacity.
“I switched sticks to my left hand when we hit the crowd, and he took off,” the rider said. “He galloped out great.”
A Revenant was officially
listed as having bled slightly,
but he walked off the track.
Joiner said that the bleeding
was very minor and that the colt was doing well the day after the final.
“With each race, he is starting to get a little bit more professional,” said Joiner.
The Rainbow carried a $1 million purse, which was a record for the race. A Revenant earned $420,000, bringing his total to $604,800. He has already earned nearly four times his purchase price of $152,000 at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.
Joiner began working with A Revenant last October. “He was a nice colt to break and never had any problems,” said the trainer.
Juliana Hawn Holt bred A Revenant in Oklahoma from Thewayouwantmetoo, who won the Rainbow Futurity in 2004. The mare has
produced 6 winners in 8 start- ers, including stakes-placed The Hiway, Belle Helene, and Luv Supreme. The second dam, Hope And Glory, also produced Hesa Eye Opener, a stakes winner in Mexico, and stakes-placed The Way You Want Me and Ryons Special Effort. The third dam, Tonya Jay Bar, was both a stakes win- ner and stakes producer.
Yordanis Amaro rode second-place Paint My Pilot (PYC Paint
Your Wagon-Ms Pilot Point) for trainer Kelli Martin. Double A Ranch owns the colt, who won his July 9 Rainbow trial by an impressive 2 1/4-lengths. Lethal Class (Tres Seis-Miss Lethal) finished third after finishing 2nd in her Rainbow trial. Blane Wood trains Lethal Class for owners P.K. and Kim Thomas, and Ivan Carnero rode her. Followed by A Tres (Tres Seis-Dash Ta Moon), Muddy Watters (Corona Cartel-Runaway Wave), Ultimate Return (High Rate Of Return-Teller Yep), Soar Like An Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Petriflying), De La Eagle (One Famous Eagle-La Reina De La Noche) & Drinkin Class (One Sweet Jess- Burning Bye). One Famous Beau scratched.
