Ruidoso Derby-G1
JESS GOOD CANDY
by Michael Cusortelli
Jess Good Candy, last year’s Champion 2 Year Old, kept his perfect record intact with a clear victory as the 3-5 favorite in the 400- yard Ruidoso Derby-G1 at Ruidoso Downs on June 11.
Ridden by Ivan Carnero and racing against a 5-mph head wind, Jess Good Candy defeated fastest qualifier and 4-1 second choice Volcom Bay by 1 3/4-lengths with a time of :19.477. Clint Crawford prepped the homebred sorrel for owner PV Quarter Horse Farms, LLC .
Jess Good Candy has won all seven
of his starts, including three stakes. The $448,825 winner’s share of the $1,068,631 Ruidoso Derby purse pushed his bankroll to $2,012,303. Jess Good Candy’s success is a tribute to the legacy of the breeding program established by the late Carl Pevehouse.
“It just means a lot for (our children) to
see the legacy of their dad carry on,” Mrs. Pevehouse said in the winner’s circle after the race. “We just love Jess Good Candy. It’s been a miracle for us. We appreciate him, and we appreciate Clint. This is the culmination of 40 years (of breeding),” she added.
Without a doubt, Jess Good Candy has a pedigree that jumps off a catalog page. The colt is one of six winners from seven starters foaled by Jess Send Candy, a winning homebred nine
year old. The mare has pro- duced two other stakes win- ners, both of whom are half sisters to Jess Good Candy
-- This Candys Awesome, whose four graded stakes victories include the $100,000 Junos Request Stakes-G2 at Remington Park on June 4, and Send Me This Wagon, who has two stakes scores.
Jess Send Candy herself
is a half sister to three stakes
winners, topped by 2011 Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1 winner Send Me A Candy Tree and three-time Grade 3 winner This Candys Special.
The fifth-fastest qualifier, Jess Good Candy was coming off of a just-as-convincing 1 1/4-length win in the 10th of 14 Ruidoso Derby trials on May 29.
Jess Good Candy’s seven wins in as many outs include a victory at odds of 10-1 in last year’s 440-yard $3-million All American Futurity-G1.
After a layoff from the races of nearly eight months, the colt began his three-year-old campaign with a 3/4-length victory against Oklahoma-breds in the 350-yard $70,000
Mr Master Bug Stakes at Remington Park on April 24.
“It’s been a good run the last couple of years,” said Crawford. “This horse right here is topping it off for us. He’s our dream and what we live for. He’s a once-in-a- lifetime horse.”
“So many people come out to cheer this horse on, and we appreciate it.” he added.
Second place Volcom Bay (Volcom-Miss Lethal) races for Bennie
and Teresa Jeter. The bay filly was ridden
by Rodrigo Vallejo for trainer Judd Kearl. Apollitical OK (Apollitical Jess-Taka Puna) ran third under Adrian Ramos for owners J. Oscar Dominguez, Joel Martinez and trainer Joel Valeriano Jr.
Famous War Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Eye For The Sixes), Hatefulist (Separatist-Hardly Hateful), Big Lew (Corona Cartel-Executive Looks), Significant Runner (Foose-Jess Significant), JM Disco Rey (Spit Curl Jess- Disco Del Rey), Brimmies Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Brimmies Alli Bi B) and Always Ur Last Call (Tempting Dash-Sixydeperry) completed the order of finish.
