with Bruce and Jill Thompson of Patterson, Calif. The Thompsons bred their mare, Brazilian Dasher, to Apollitical Jess twice after buying her privately midway through her rac- ing career.
“The mare was at the track at the time,” said Bruce. “Juan Aleman was instrumental in our getting her. I had a couple of horses, but nothing of her quality. I decided to roll the dice and get her.”
Aleman was training Apollitical Jess, and the Thompsons bought Brazilian Dasher with the idea of breeding her to that colt.
“Apollitical Jess looked like he was going to be something special,” said Bruce.
Brazilian Dasher, a half-sister to Champion FDD Dynasty, died two years ago. She has pro- duced four winners from six starters, including stakes winner Apollitical Legacy, the filly the Thompsons got in the first embryo sharing when Rancho el Cabresto got Apollitical Blood.
Aleman, who is based at Los Alamitos and also trains out of Rancho el Cabresto in San Jacinto, California, put the embryo-sharing plan together. Brazilian Dasher produced four other foals by Apollitical Jess, as well as two by
Captain Courage and two by One Sweet Jess. The second two by Apollitical Jess are 3 year olds, and the third ones are yearlings.
The Thompsons raise their babies at home after having Burns Ranch handle the embryo transfers. They own another daughter of Apollitical Jess, 3-year-old Run By You, who is in training with Aleman. She has won four races and earned nearly $50,000.
Bruce Thompson owns a car dealership and enjoys having a few horses. “I’ve got a little eight-stall barn—I don’t have a big operation,” Bruce said. “I’ve been very, very fortunate. I claimed my first horse in 2009. A guy who I work with got me involved with it, and all of
a sudden I’m breeding an All American Derby winner. It’s pretty neat.”
Thompson and Aleman partnered on Apollitical Legacy and sold her. Aleman trains the Thompsons’ 2 year old, Apollitical Dynasty, who was recently gelded after breaking his maiden
and finishing third in a trial. The Thompsons’ yearling, the filly Apolliticaltradition, is headed to Aleman for breaking and training. “We raised her at the house,” said Bruce.
Now that Apolliticaltradition is a full sister
to an All American Derby winner, Bruce has definite broodmare plans for her in the future.
Rancho el Cabresto sold its yearling full sister at this year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale for $52,000 to Gustavo De La Torre.
Sam Crow (Valiant Hero- Bourbonstreetchick) finished second in the All American Derby with Ricky Ramirez aboard. Blaine Wood trains the gelding for owner Terry Baber. Sam Crow finished second in this year’s Rainbow Derby-G1 and third in last year’s All American Futurity-G1.
Paul Jones owns and trains third-place Fire Fortune (Walk Thru Fire-Sizzling), ridden by Cody Jensen. The gelding has won allowance races at Los Alamitos and Ruidoso.
Completing the field were Premier Ethics (Ethics Aside-Poker Pot Dash), Politicaly Correct (Apollitical Jess-Senorita Tres), Famous Corona Lady (Corona Cartel-One Famous Lady), Dynazip (FDD Dynasty-Zip Zima), Mad About The Moon (First Moonflash-Streaking Power), Bringin The Gray (Mr Jess Perry-None As Easy), and Kiss My Hocks (Tempting Dash- Romancing Mary).
