WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY WHEN IT COMES TO TRAINING A HORSE?
“There’s a lot of individual needs. I had an owner today who came up and said, ‘Why do you take off the blinkers on that horse?’ I wish they could tell me what I need to do, but I try to read between the lines and watch the horse and make adjustments that way. The training process is pretty similar: breaking a horse and doing what we do, but there’s always little deals you have to do on each individual horse. I’ve been around a lot of good horsemen. I’ve been blessed. My dad, Don Farris, Cascio, people
who I can call and rely on. There’s always going to be something. Every time you think you’ve got it figured out; something will happen.”
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TRACK TO RUN RACES, AND WHY?
“Sam Houston Race Park. I like the
track surface. I’m being a little prejudiced because it’s close to my house. I like Lone Star, too, but Sam Houston is probably more my favorite. The track surface, we’re able to break our babies there and gate them. It’s very horse-friendly, in my opinion.”

WHAT FUTURE GOALS DO YOU HAVE IN RACING?
“My dad passed away in February. He
was very proud because we started breeding race horses and I trained some that qualified for Grade 1’s. We qualified one for the All American Derby last year that my dad and
I and my wife bred and raised. Brad Davies was my partner. My goal is to qualify, like everyone’s dream is, to the All American and win the thing. There’s a lot of people who never won that race. Don Farris is one of them. That’s my goal, to get one to run in the All American Futurity.”
WHAT’S THE BEST HORSE YOU’VE WORKED WITH AND WHY?
“That’s a tough question. As a groom, I worked with Denim N Diamonds. I got to take care of her, the beginning of her three-year-old year. We went to California and won several stakes races including the 1981 Champion of Champions. When I got back in training, Fire Up Eagle was my first stakes winner.”
ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO ASPIRES TO BECOME A TRAINER?
“It’s a seven day-a-week job. You’d better love it. I sat behind a desk and ran a large team of people and whenever you’re out here in the morning, on horseback, watching a horse gallop, it’s amazing. That’s why I did it. Why I’m doing it. Sometimes it’s not always about the money.”
