 Delta Downs Declares Meet Leaders
Delta Downs ended their 2022 Quarter Horse season which ran from April 29 through July 16, declaring their meet leaders. The leading owner was Rogelio Marquez Jr., who won his third Lee Berwick Futurity-RG1
with San Lorenzo Jet. Marquez, who was the leading owner in 2017, won 14 races with earnings of $908,855. The leading trainer title went to Juan Cano, who won the award for the first time with 36 winners and $618,248 in earnings. The leading trainer by earnings was Jesus Marquez, the trainer of San Lorenzo Jet, with $939,893. The leading jockey was Juan
F. Garcia Jr., who won the title for the first time with 39 victories. The leading jockey by earnings was David Alvarez with $1,188,295, who rode San Lorenzo Jet.
AQHA Racing Council Elects New Members
The AQHA Racing Council elected three new members to serve 3-year terms that will
end in May 2025. Ron Bullock and Bobby Simmons are AQHA directors and Tim Williams will serve as a track representative. Bullock has been involved in Quarter Horse racing for over 40 years and is serving his second term on the Racing Committee; Simmons was a professional roper and he and wife Catherine have served
on several committees; and Williams has been involved in racing for over 40 years as a trainer and jockey, is the director of racing at Remington Park and has served on the AQHA Racing Committee. Bullock, Simmons and Williams join the 10-member Racing Council which also includes AQHA Executive Committee Member Jeff Tebow, Racing Committee Chairman G.R. Carter Jr., and members Duayne Didericksen, John Hammes, Lloyd Yother, Ross Brigden and Dr. Larry Findley.
Revolutionary Racing Kentucky QH Track
Revolutionary Racing submitted an application for the final racetrack license in the state of Kentucky and laid out concrete plans for its proposed Quarter Horse track in the eastern part of the state in Camp Landing. Revolutionary Racing told the commission that the track is projected to bring an annual handle of $500 million, with a net revenue of $40 million, and an estimated $1 million in taxes. Track designer Tod Gralla said the new track would be based on the design of Los Alamitos Race Course. Phase 1 of construction would include stalls, a picnic area, a laboratory to test horses and an isolation barn. Phase 2 would include construction of a horse arena for shows. Co-founder Larry Lucas said the track would support 200 full time jobs
and $500,000 in daily purses once in
full operation.
Dr. Seth Fishman Sentenced To 11 Years For Doping
Florida veterinarian Dr. Seth Fishman
has been sentenced to 11 years in prison and a $250,000 fine after being found guilty of two counts of conspiracy to commit drug adulteration and misbranding with the intent to defraud.
The trial was part of a larger federal horse racing performance-enhancing drug case and is the longest sentence filed against 31 individuals. Prosecutors told the jury that over 20 years Fishman supplied illegal performance drugs
to hundreds of trainers. In addition to prison time, Fishman will be held jointly responsible
for $25 million in restitution along with other co-conspirators. He must also forfeit $13.5 million earned from his business of manufacturing and distributing his substances that were allegedly designed to evade detection in post-racing testing.
Ukrainian Equestrian Charity Seeks Donations
According to The Paulick Report, the Ukrainian Equestrian Federation Charity Foundation has seen donations fall in their attempt to care for the many horses in the country trying to survive after being caught up in the war against Russia. The charity estimates donations are averaging just over $1,000 per week, although it takes nearly $29,000 per week to cover the aid requested from around 300 stables. Global Gaming Withdraws From Nebraska Racetrack/Casino
Global Gaming Solutions, a subsidiary of
the Chickasaw Tribe of Oklahoma and owner
of Remington Park and Lone Star Park, has withdrawn a proposed partnership with Brian Becker, who’s family operates Fair Play Park in Nebraska, to develop new racinos at two locations in the state. The Becker’s group planned casino site in North Platte is owned by Sovereign Properties Holdoco of Ada, Oklahoma, a subsidiary of the Chickasaw Nation which purchased the 77-acre site for more than $2.4 million.
Three New Track Records At Canterbury Park
Three New Track Records were set at Canterbury Park on July 14. The reigning World Champion Danjer (FDD Dynasty-Shez Jess Toxic) set a New Track Record under jockey Cody Smith while winning the Grade 3 Bank
of America Canterbury Pak Championship Challenge, scoring in the 440-yard $50,000 event with a 2 1/2-length winning margin in :21.070 for a career-high 119 speed index. Bred, co-owned, and trained by Dean Frey, who co-owns Danjer with Downtime Enterprises LLC and Billy G. Smith, the clocking bested
the previous record of :21.162 set in 2011. In the 400-yard $30,000 Grade 3 Q-Racing Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge, Lynnder 16 (Apollitical Jess-Tinys Corona Queen) overcame a brushed start to win the event by a neck in :19.560 for a 105 speed index. Racing for owners Tom Maher and Richard Tobin and trainer Jason Olmstead, Lynnder 16 was ridden by Edwin Escobeda
and bettered the previous record of :19.583 set
in 2014. And in the 350-yard $35,000 Bob Morehouse Stakes, Jess Rocket Man (Apollitical Jess-Paint Or More) and jockey Luis Valenzuela covered the distance in :17.353 for a 108 speed index to break the previous record of :17.360
set in 2019. The gelding is bred and owned by Lunderborg LLC and trained by Jason Olmstead.
