Some other notable runners trained by Brinson included: Prince Don B, who won 10 stakes races including the Seabiscuit Stakes twice, earning $409,055; Savaii, winner of four stakes including the 1962
Del Mar Oaks, earning $175,262; and Six Fifteen, who had 126 starts, earning over $140,000 and three stakes wins including the Berkley Handicap.
Ross Brinson trained for many people and one of the most interesting to us following Quarter Horses is J. Rukin Jelks. Jelks was a major player in bringing Piggin String, a Thoroughbred, to Arizona. Piggin String was a two-time Champion Stallion in 1943-44 and 1945-46. He was the sire of Rukin String, bred by Jelks and the 1952 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt and the 1953 Champion Stallion and Champion 3-Year- Old Colt. Jelks was a co-owner of a colt
was the first California-bred winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup in 1947 where he set a New Track Record. For Brinson, Cover Up set himself apart from the other Brinson- trained runners when he came back five days later to win the Sunset Handicap. He won six stakes races and $215,420.
Ross Brinson also trained Billy Ball, named for the legendary baseball manager Billy Martin, a part owner and a friend of Brinson. Billy Ball was reportedly being pointed at the 1983 Kentucky Derby-G1 when he finished third in the California Derby-G2. The third place made him unable to have enough earnings to get into that year’s Kentucky Derby. Billy Ball won six of nine starts including three stakes races in the Golden Bear Stakes, the Gold Rush Stakes and the Hillsdale Stakes before an injury forced his retirement. He earned $159,084.
2-time Quarter Horse Champion Piggin String TB, sire of 3-time Champion Rukin String.
They (Gary and Clay Brinson) remembered Little Request as an easy-going horse that could be ridden around the shed row.
