The first seven words that come to mind when I think about Connie Golden are caring, funny, wise, business savvy, stylish, stern and humble. I have been working for Speedhorse since I was a young pup. Connie took me in and gave me the opportunity to work my way from the ground up. She was my mentor, my family and my friend. She cared about her employees personally, rather than just as a boss. She would always ask how I was doing, whether it be from
a personal perspective or professional, and was very vocal and supportive of my well being. She was an open ear and an excellent teacher. She always gave the best advice. I would not be where I am today without Connie’s humble guidance.

All through my tenure with Speedhorse, I’ve had the utmost respect for Connie. When I began working for Speedhorse
in 1985, the magazine was “old school” in its production methods, and we all spent a great deal of time together working on the various newspapers and magazines. Connie was always a fearless, ambitious, innovative and determined leader. She had a vision of what she wanted, and combined with her vast knowledge of the industry and keen sense of intuition, she always accomplished what she had set out to do. I have the deepest respect for Connie, and greatly appreciate and cherish the things she taught me over the years.

I consider myself very fortunate to have been one of Connie’s “Golden Girls.” Little did I know what wonderful surroundings I would get to be a part of working at Speedhorse. We weren’t treated as employees, we were treated as family. Connie was one of the most amazing people I have ever met. My life is richer for having known her. Connie’s

smile was warm, her laugh infectious and her wisdom immeasurable. I will cherish my memories that she has left for me. One of my favorites is seeing her huge smile when
I would bring her fluffy white bunny into her office to say “Hi” and get a scratch behind his ears. She will always have a special place in my heart.

I am so grateful to have worked for Connie. Through the years I came to admire Connie for her tenacity and zest for life, and for the wonderful example she set as a strong, independent woman. I always found encouragement, and sometimes humor, in her words of wisdom. She loved and enjoyed her family above all else and you could see the joy in her eyes as she would tell of their adventures. She loved to share her experiences and had an infectious laugh that could bring a room to tears! I count it a blessing to have known such a generous yet humble woman.

I went to work for Connie at Speedhorse in 1988. She was a fierce business woman who possessed the work ethic and iron will to succeed in an industry primarily run by men. She was a class act at all times—a great mother and grandmother who loved her family beyond all else. She was generous to a fault with those she cared about. Her ability to read people and know what was in their hearts was uncanny. She possessed a great sense of self and sense of humor. I am honored to have known her, and thankful for the wisdom she shared with me. I am where I am today because of the opportunities she gave me.
