The Select Quarter Horse Yearling Auction XXXIV was held Sept. 4-6, 2018, this being the first time it has been extended to three days be- cause 510 individuals were registered. The stage was the infield of the track at the Hipódromo de las Américas, under the coordination of the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horse- men AC (AMCCCCM), whose President Antonio Lobeto Tamez welcomed the participants.
With the scratching of 37 yearlings, 473 pa- raded through the ring under the leadership of auctioneer Frank Froese, supported by veterinar- ian Daniel Hernández. Said specimens were con- signed by 107 breeders from different regions of the country and are the offspring of 124 stallions.
The total sale had a value of $76,539,000 pesos ($3,924,051 US), which when compared to 2017 represents an increase of 31% in pesos, attributed mainly to the increase in the aver- age price per head which was 24.9%, since the number of yearlings offered only grew by 4.6%. In dollars, the increase in total sales was 19.8% and a 14.3% increase in average price due to the devaluation of the peso against the dollar.
Of the total handled, 184 individuals were sold in the ring (39%) and 290 were repurchased (61%), which means an increase of 14 percentage points in the proportion of yearlings repurchased with respect to 2017; consequently, the percentage of the sale was reduced in the same proportion.
The breeders that offered the most year- lings with 183 (39%) were: Rancho Hacienda Santiago (31), Cuadra La Presita (28), Salomé Gallegos (28), Abelardo Gallegos (22), Joaquín Ramón Peláez - Cortés (20), Armando León (15), Rancho El 21 (14), Maximiliano Pérez Castañeda (13) and Everardo Múzquiz (12).

The 167 yearlings of the 10 stallions mentioned above accounted for 35% of the offerings.
The highest average numbers were for the off- spring by Nofishinonafullmoon (by Separatist), whose three yearlings averaged $536,666 pesos ($27,514 US) and included third high seller LA Nofishinladybugs; followed by Fearless Fritz (by Shazoom) with $420,000 pesos ($21,533 US) for his four yearlings, highlighted by the colt Isa Fearles Boy; Danny Cartel (by Corona Cartel) with an average of $387,083 pesos ($19,845 US) which included Malefico Cartel, who reached the record price of $920,000 pesos ($47,167 US); Sambaso Dancer (by First Down Dash), whose four yearlings averaged $362,500 pesos ($18,585 US); Natovas Prince (by Corona Cartel) with an average price of $350,000 pesos ($17,944 US) highlighted by El Barbaján, a colt that was the second best seller; Zulu Dragon (by First Down

In summary, the 81 offspring of these 10 stallions averaged $17,129 per head, 107% high- er than the overall average price ($8,287 US)
Based on an agreement of its assembly, the AMCCCCM did not provide the detailed list of results of the sale for security reasons for sellers and buyers.
From our own presence in the sales room, we obtained the list of the 21 yearlings that were quoted at $425,000 pesos or more ($21,789 US), which is a part of this report from which the first three lots were selected.
The list is headed by the chestnut colt Malefico Cartel (Lot 423), who closed offers at $920,000 pesos ($47,167 US). He was con- signed by Cuadra La Presita and is the son of Danny Cartel out of La Chuchena by This Snow Is Royal. It is the best price achieved in the his- tory of the auction and exceeds the $880,000 pesos ($46,315 US) achieved in 2017 by Z Tynis Jess, bred by Rancho Hacienda Santiago.
His sire Danny Cartel si 98, a son of Corona Cartel out of Takin Some Gold by Takin On The Cash, is a winner of two races with a sec- ond and a third in five outings at four years of age with $45,653 in earnings and is placed and a finalist in stakes in the United States. Danny Cartel is the sire of 62 offspring of running age with 40 runners, 21 winners and four stakes winners, including Soliat si 108, with 10 wins and three seconds in 14 starts and $163,745 dol- lars in Mexico, where he set a New Track Record at 300 yards and The Bedouin Cartel si 102, winner of four races, among them the Mexico Futurity, with earnings of $58,575 dollars.
The dam of Malefico Cartel, La Chuchena, did not race but is the producer of stakes winner No Attain si 99 (by Bullish One), with seven wins in 12 performances. The mare also pro- duced RG Malefika Cartel, a full sister to Ma- lefico Cartel and a winner of five races to three years of age with $33,081.
The second highest seller was obtained by the red-bay horse El Barbaján (Lot 334) con- signed by Guillermo Elizondo, which reached $830,000 pesos ($42,553 US). He is by Natovas Prince and out of Fire Woman by Walk Thru Fire. Natovas Prince obtained two first and two second places, as well as earnings for $14,200 dollars. Of his 10 crops, 23 are runners with 15 winners of 24 races, 11 ROM, including stakes winner La Escuincle si 88, Mexican Bred Juve- nile Champion and $41,618 US, etc. The dam of
El Barbajan, Fire Woman si 89, was a winner at two years of age and earned $10,613 dollars. Her only running daughter is Quota, placed in two starts, in turn the dam of Seperate Jess si 112, a winner of eight races and $22,077 dollars.
The third highest seller at $800,000 pe- sos ($41,015 US), offered for the dappled colt LA Nofishinladybugs (Lot 187), consigned by Ramiro González Ozuna. He is by Nofishinon- afullmoon and out A Special Ladybug by My Mr Special Bug, the same cross that produced Mexico High Point Aged Gelding Lafishing- onabugsmoon si 99 with five wins, seven sec- onds, two thirds, and earnings of $52,660 dol- lars. He won the Enrique Carrión Álvarez and Salvador Oñate Ascensio Classics, was second in the Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal Classic, etc.
In conclusion, comparing the results pre- sented with those of 2017, there was an in- crease of 4.6% in the supply of yearlings, sus- tained by a greater number of breeders (15%). The value of the offers increased by 31%, which is mainly explained by the increased demand in the face of the attractive and in- creasing prizes that futurities have for which the auctioned athletes are eligible. Similarly, there is an improvement in the genetics of the breeding stock, both stallions and mares, as well as in the progeny, which results in more attractive and competitive products.
