                                Sunland Suspends Racing Over EHV-1 Outbreak
Sunland Park officials on Jan. 10 suspended live racing for 14 days due to an outbreak of EHV-1, an Equine Herpes Virus. No strain
of EHV is transmissible to humans, but this particular strain can cause severe neurological problems in horses. The virus is passed through direct contact from horse to horse or indi-
rectly via humans or inanimate objects. The New Mexico Livestock Board & New Mexico Racing Commission worked with Sunland Park officials to ensure that the virus is limited to the few horses confirmed positive, and government regulatory measures were taken to control the spread of the virus.
Turf Paradise Placed Under Quarantine
On Jan. 28, the Arizona Dept. of Agriculture imposed a 21-day quarantine on the stable area at Turf Paradise after a horse
was euthanized with symptoms consistent with Equine Herpes Virus. Turf Paradise announced that racehorses would not be allowed to leave and return to the track without proof of origins or proof of vaccination for the virus within
the last 14-60 days, pony horses would not be allowed to leave and return to the track, new pony ship-ins would not be allowed, no horses would be allowed to return to the track after racing at Rillito Park, only horses that have raced at Turf Paradise within the last 45 days would be allowed to ship on the grounds, and horses from New Mexico and Texas would not be permitted onto track property. According to Turf Paradise general manager Vince Francia, jockeys coming from New Mexico are required to sterilize their clothes and equipment. The track will continue live racing as scheduled.
Oklahoma Racetracks Policy Regarding EHV-1
Due to the recent outbreak of the neuro- logic strain of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1), the following policies have been developed
in collaboration with the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission as of Jan. 29 and until further notice: no horses will be admitted on the grounds of an Oklahoma licensed race- track if they are coming from a county with a facility or racetrack that is under quarantine or coming from a county adjacent to a county where quarantine has been implemented;
no trailer, van, or transport vehicle will be allowed to enter the enclosure of a racetrack unless each horse has a current health cer- tificate and the issuing veterinarian states a physical exam has been performed within 72 hours prior to arrival and verifies the horse has not been stabled in an EHV-1 quarantined county or adjacent county within the past 21 days; and horsemen keep every horse admitted to or on the grounds on a current 60-day FDA approved EHV-1 vaccine or EHV-1 Booster
schedule. Any individual that does not adhere to these conditions will be ejected from the track and will not be allowed to participate
in the meet. Please contact the racetrack
for more information and a complete list of regulations.

Horse Racing in Georgia
On Jan. 27, a Georgia senate committee in approved two measures to create a new “division of horse racing” within the Georgia Lottery Corporation. Although Gov. Nathan Deal opposed the expansion, votes by the Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee show willingness by some leaders to keep the effort in play. Sen. Jeff Mullis believes it’s his obligation to put it on the ballot to let his “constituents have their say.” Addressing concerns that legalized horse racing would set the table for other gambling opportunities, Sen. Brandon Beach wants to restrict where Georgians could place their wagers. If the bill passes, it will allow up to
3 privately owned and operated racetracks in the state that would give 3% of proceeds to the HOPE scholarship for college students. Two-thirds of the members in each chamber of the Legislature are required to approve
the bill before it could get placed on the November ballot for voters.
