When the name Dr. Ed Allred appears in the media, it has to do with either
Los Alamitos Race Course or his Rolling A Ranch in Atascadero, California. Dr. Allred started on his journey in horse racing back in the 1950’s when he went to Los Alamitos as a racing enthusiast. His journey through horse racing has carried him to today as the owner of this famous Southern California racetrack.
Along the way Dr. Ed Allred became a Quarter Horse breeder, and that part of the journey has made him the all- time leading breeder of money earners. The horses bred in his name have won over $48 million. The Allred breeding program at his Rolling A Ranch just won their 10th AQHA Leading Breeder Award in 2014. He is also the all-time leading owner with horses raced in his name earning over $16 million.
When you survey the Allred breeding program, you quickly see that it was built on good mare families through such mares as Separate Ways, Jetsetting Girl, Elans Special and, of course, the great race mare Charger Bar. Some of the noted horses produced from these mares would include Separatist, Make
It Anywhere, Way Maker, Fixin To Fly, Bridlewood and Catchmeinyourdreams. It is through these mare lines that Dr. Allred became the all-time leading breeder of money winners.
When we look at 2014, we find that Dr. Allred bred and raced three Grade
1 winners. Two of those horses were
He Looks Hot and Once Over. Both of these runners are out of Look Her Over, the 2014 Speedhorse Broodmare Of The Year. Dr. Allred bred and raced Look Her Over, and today she is a distinguished member of the Allred broodmare band. Let’s do a pedigree perspective on this great mare and see how her mare line has helped Dr. Allred become the breeder of so many great horses.
A pedigree perspective of Look Her Over starts back in the 1950’s with a mare named Annahi and a horseman named Wayne Charlton. The purchase of Annahi would bring Charlton to prominence as a horse owner, trainer and breeder.
Wayne Charlton was brought up on
a farm in Ogden, Utah, where he loved fast horses. He was a machinist for the American Can Company in 1951 when he bought Annahi. He recently recalled why he bought this mare, “I was just starting out and a friend of mine ran a few horses, and I knew a little bit about her
