Each year the New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association gives an award to the year’s outstanding Thoroughbred stallion. The proud recipient of that award for 1980 was Ho-Jo Farm on behalf of Scout Leader. Since coming to New Mexico in 1969, Scout Leader. list of foals, the majority of whom are stakes winners and stakes placed. In addition to servicing a large number of mares in New Mexico, he has been much sought after as
a stud for horsemen in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Arizona, which certainly attests to his worth.
When Howard Beddo and Dr. Joe Miller first brought Scout Leader to New Mexico, a good number of the horsemen in this state felt that something had to be wrong with
him. Why else would a son of Bold Ruler have been dispelled as he’s sired horse after horse, and all have proved to be runners.
Beddo and Miller bought Ho-Jo Farm back in 1964. Dr. Miller was working with horses in the El Paso-Sunland Park area, and Mr. Beddo, who had been training horses
in California, was attending school at the University of Texas, El Paso and working on the starting gate at Sunland Park Race Track. About that time they heard of the land for
