MEETING TIME
the owners of these horses.
In addition, during the first nine days of the
SunRay meet 129 horses competed in 15 New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred overnight races, an average of 8.6 entries per race. A total of 58 horses competed in seven New Mexico-bred Quarter Horse overnight races, an average of 8.3 entries per race.
During his report to the commission, NMRC chairman Sam Bregman of Albuquerque reminded all covered people that they must register with the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority by July 1. Anyone involved
with Thoroughbred racing -- that is, anyone
who touches a horse -- is required to register. All individual Thoroughbred horses will also have
to be registered with HISA. If a horse or covered person is not registered with HISA, they will not be allowed to race. At this point, Quarter Horse
racing is not affected.
To register, visit www.hisaus.org, and click
on the “Register/Registro” link on the top right side of the website.
“There is no registration fee, and the process will take five minutes,” Mr. Bregman said. He added that “there will be a lot of cost for this, and everyone will have to help pay.”
The racetrack safety portion of HISA will begin on July 1, 2022. The drug-testing portion will begin January 1, 2023.
During his report to the commission, NMRC executive director Ismael “Izzy”
Trejo said that commission investigator Leasa Johnson and Dr. Alan Chastain took 150 samples from the 2-year-olds who competed in the training races at Ruidoso Downs May 10-11. He also reported that handle at SunRay Park was up 40 percent on-track but down 95
percent overall due to the fact that the track is not able to export its signal to other locations.
“With SunRay Park not able to export its signal, the state of New Mexico, the horsemen and the racetrack are losing money,” said commissioner Billy G. Smith.
Also at the meeting:
• *The commission set its meeting dates for the rest of 2022. The dates are: July 21, 9 a.m. at Ruidoso Downs; August 18, 9 a.m. at The Downs at Albuquerque; September 22, 9 a.m. at the commission offices in Albuquerque; October 20, 9 a.m., at the commission offices; and November 17, 9 a.m. at the commission offices.
• *SunRay Park director of racing Lonnie Barber told the commission that the track’s average field size is nine per race and that on-track handle has increased.
Registration Papers
