THE HIPÓDROMO DE LAS AMÉRICAS SUSPENDS ACTIVITIES DUE TO COVID-19
On March 18, the CODERE Company, concessionaire and operator of the Hipódromo de Las Américas Racecourse,
located in Mexico City, unveiled the suspen- sion of horse racing from March 20 and until April 19 “as events evolve,” referring to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
The aim is to protect the health and safety of the equestrian community and workers, helping
to prevent the spread of the disease. The facilities will only be open for official works on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and for authorized personnel to properly attend to horses staying in the stables. Races are set to resume on Saturday, April 25.
In addition to the above, the Mexican Association of Breeders and Horsemen Quarter
Mile (AMCCCCM), adjusted its calendar of clas- sics for the current season to fulfill it under this new scenario. First, only the trial dates were rescheduled.
However, in the event of a phase 2 of
the pandemic and the corresponding health measures, the Board of Directors determined to cancel the classics originally scheduled, with the first classic now being scheduled for June 7. This decision was announced to breeders and owners on April 3, in order to give them time to prepare. Nomination and registration fees will be refunded.
The following classics that are canceled are: Enrique Carrión Alvarez Classic, Chirina Glorys Classic, Gabriel Cue Sacre Classic, The Prize Classic, Mexico Derby and Mexico Futurity.
The classics that have modified dates are the AMCCCCM Classic, Revelation Classic and Garanones Derby.
With these changes, the stakes program for the current season of the Hipódromo de Las Américas has been reduced - for now - from 50 to 44.
Both CODERE and AMCCCCM will pro- ceed in accordance with the evolution of the pan- demic in Mexico, and the indications of the health authorities. The means of contact are: CODERE, Mauricio Dorantes, email: jose.dorantes@codere. com, phone: 5518304613; AMCCCCM will close its office from April 6-19, but their staff will work from home.
