                 AHC Develops COVID-19 Resource Center
The American Horse Council (AHC) has developed a COVID-19 Resource Center to address human health, horse health and busi- ness health. The center contains articles and news to help horse owners, equine non-profits, equine businesses and equine industry employ- ees. The center can be found at www.horsec- ouncil.org and click on COVID-19 Resources.
Trainer Bobby Martinez Fined
Trainer Bobby Martinez was fined $480,000 and suspended until 2054 by the New Mexico Racing Commission as a result of eight positive tests for prohibited medication. All eight horses were owned by Jose Fabian Hernandez and were purchased as yearlings at the TQHA, LQHBA and Ruidoso sales. The horses that received positive tests are FM Dynasty Rock, FM Ease Rock, FM Lion Rock, FM Bushwacker, FM Cowboys Rock, FM Party Rock, FM Loko Rock and FM Tempting Rock. Martinez has trained Quarter Horse earners of $13 million, including World Champion Oak Tree Special & Champion Open Me A Corona.
May Named Minnesota Racing Commission Executive Director
Steve May has been appointed by Gov. Tim Walz as the next Minnesota Racing Commission Executive Director. May is the director of Pari- Mutuel Wagering and Compliance for the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and previously May has served as vice president and business manager of the Association of Racing Commissioners International. He will assume his new duties in late April.
FDA Relaxes Regulations to Assist Veterinarians During COVID-19
The FDA announced on March 31 that it intends to temporarily suspend enforcement
of portions of the federal veterinarian-client- patient relationship (VCPR) requirements in order to help veterinarians utilize telemedi- cine to address animal health needs during
the COVID-19 pandemic. This will allow veterinarians to prescribe drugs in an extralabel manner or authorize the use of Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) drugs without direct exami- nation of or making visits to the patients, thus limiting human-to-human contact.
Horseman Dies From COVID-19
New Jersey’s first coronavirus fatality was 69-year-old John Brennan, who worked at Yonkers Raceway. Brennan trained horses for over 40 years and was a horseman’s field representative for the Standardbred Owners Association (SOA) of New York. COVID-19 exacerbated his existing health conditions according to SOA President, Joseph Faraldo, who is also exhibiting signs of the virus. Employees at the track who worked near Brennan’s office were told to self-quarantine.
Blaine Hadley Passes Away
Utah horseman Blaine Hadley, 85, passed away from pneumonia on March 29. Blaine began his career in the horse industry at 19 years of age. He found success in the rodeo arena, winning the RMRA All-Around Title in 1955 as a calf roper, team roper and bulldogger.
The highlight of his career came when he and his family won the 1985 Chariot Racing World Championship. On the flat track, Hadley trained the earners of over $500,000, includ- ing Grade 2 Bitterroot Futurity winner Decati. Hadley is survived by many family members and friends, including 28 grandchildren.
Oregon Horseman John Leonard Passes Away
Breeder/owner John C. Leonard passed away on Feb. 28 at the age of 89. Leonard and his wife Pat owned a Quarter Horse ranch
in Oregon, where they raised racing Quarter Horses for many years. Their first big run-
ner was Party’s Jet, a multiple stakes winner who won 20 of 51 starts. Perhaps their best runner, however, was multiple stakes winner Party Street, who won 21 races and broke track records in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California, some of which still stand today. Leonard is survived by his wife, along with many other family members and friends.
Larry “Ace” Peterson Passes Away
Longtime horseman Larry “Ace” Peterson, 87, passed away surrounded by family on March 30. Peterson had a passion for Quarter Horse racing that began with Town Policy Handicap winner BCR A Blurr For Sure.
Larry also competed in tie-down roping, steer wrestling & team roping. His nephew Billy Peterson won the 1995 All American Futurity with World Champion Winalota Cash. Larry is survived by his wife Marlene, five children and many other loving family members and friends.
