that the yearlings are registered and eligible to par- ticipate in one or more of the four exclusive derbies and futurities which currently pay the highest monetary prizes on the equestrian calendar in the Hipodromo de Las Americas. These are the Select Auction Futurity, Mexican Stallions and Breeders Futurity, and Mexico Futurity, which started in 2010. The fees to remain eligible for these classics are due on the dates set by AMCM.
Market conditions are currently unfavorable in Mexican equine investment due to insecurity in several regions of the country, which has
led to the closing or reduction of activities and important facilities. To this one must also add the lack of a governmental body to oversee this specific livestock sector. However, each year
we see in our Select Auction foals of genetic quality and physical development similar to yearlings bred in the United States.
The people most affected are small and medium sized breeders. One of these breeders described the situation as follows: “It’s not that all should be expensively sold, or a price that satisfies both the buyer and seller. High and low prices occur in all auctions, including in the most famous sales in the United States. The problem
is when the price obtained is insufficient to cover costs from the breeding of the mare with the stallion, the maintenance of the mare during pregnancy, and the birth and upbringing of the foal until it is presented in the auction ring.”
In the Auction Select 2012, scheduled for September 5-6, 2012, we will see if the record number of yearlings for 2011 is indicative of a rise in national breeding for Quarter Horses.
