SALES
The New Mexico-bred Quarter Horse Yearling Sale, presented at Ruidoso Downs on Aug. 17, concluded with averages that held steady over last year and an increase in median price.
The sale was split into two sessions, with Quarter Horses selling on Friday night and Thoroughbreds selling on Saturday. The fol- lowing figures reflect Quarter Horse sales only.
A total of 225 horses were catalogued, with 16 withdrawn. A total of 209 horses went through the ring, with 170 sold for $1,562,800. Thirty-three horses were repurchased, and six did not receive any bids. The average price, including repurchases and no bids, was $8,416. The average, excluding repurchases and no bids, was $9,193, a figure several dollars above last year’s average of $9,171, while the median was $5,350, up from $5,000 last year.
Jesse James Jr was the leading sire by average, with 21 head averaging $19,723. Jesse James Jr sired six of the Top 10 highest sellers, including sale topper Veramonte. Consigned by MJ Farms, Veramonte brought a final bid of $92,000 from Bob and Delores Gerhardt. The colt is a half- brother to Wild Six, a multiple Grade 1 winner and earner of $601,632, and the dam of stakes- placed Wild And Game. Veramonte’s dam is Wild Vines, a graded stakes finalist and half- sister to stakes winner Arbor Mist. His second dam is stakes winner Famous Chapelle.
MJ Farms sold five of the Top 10 highest sell- ers, while TNL Farms sold four of the Top 10.
The second-leading sire by average was Hard Hitting, who was represented by six year- lings that averaged $17,366. Hard Hitting sired the second-highest seller, Heza Fast Hitter.
He sold for $45,000 to Stan Watkins from the TNL Farm consignment. Heza Fast Hitter is out of Prissy Sin, is a half-sister to champion and stakes-winning producer Blazin Fire and stakes winner The Blazin Man.
Jesse James Jr was also the leading sire by total sales, at $414,200 for 21 head, while First Moonflash checked into second with 33 head from his first crop of yearlings grossing $268,900. Swissle Stick-TB was third by gross sales, with 12 yearlings bringing $134,100.
The leading broodmare sire (with more than one yearling sold) was The Signature, with three head averaging $35,733.
A broodmare session was held on Aug. 18, with 10 Quarter Horse broodmares selling. Hip #378, Sixy Straw (Strawfly Special-Sixy Bottom, Streakin Six), was the highest-selling broodmare, bringing a final bid of $24,000 from Reliance Ranches. TNL Farm, Inc., Agent, consigned the graded stakes finalist, who was in foal to Hard Hitting.
