THE NEWS
Apocalyptical Jess was bred in Oklahoma by Danny Joe Miller, Robbins’ father-in-law. He is
a sorrel son of 2010 AQHA World Champion Apollitical Jess and the winning and graded stakes placed Holland Ease mare Cassandra Crest.
Apocalyptical Jess has won two of four starts, all at Ruidoso Downs, and the $1.5-million winner’s share of the All American Futurity purse increased the gelding’s earnings to $1,506,400.
Total wagering handle on Ruidoso Downs’ 11-race Labor Day program reached $1,650,810, which was 6 percent higher than the $1,557,694
that was bet on the track’s 12-race card on Labor Day 2017, despite one fewer race.
On Sept. 2, Hotstepper won the 440-yard $1,238,655 All American Derby (G1), the
sport’s richest race for 3 year olds, in front of an announced on-track crowd of 10,428. Ridden
by Cody Jensen, the bay gelding by Champion One Famous Eagle defeated 2017 All American Futurity winner Fly Baby Fly by a neck in :21.274. C. Dwayne “Sleepy” Gilbreath trained Hotstepper for owners Johnny D. Cope, R.D. Hubbard, Rafter W Stables and Henry “Butch” Southway.
Hotstepper was bred in Texas by Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches LP, and he was purchased by his owners for $63,000 at the 2016 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The gelding has won five of 13 races, and the $520,235 winner’s share of the purse from his first stakes victory pushed his bankroll to $1,086,656.
This year’s 11-race All American Derby program handled $1,102,699 on and off track, an increase of 5 percent over the $1,048,544 bet on last year’s 11-race Derby Day card.
Yearling Colt Raises $40,000 for “Stand With Estela” Fund
Stells Bold Journey, a bay colt by Attila’s Storm consigned by A & A Ranch for owner Jimmy Dick, sold for $40,000 at the Aug. 17-18 New Mexico- Bred Sale to benefit the “Stand With Estela” Fund.
The Thoroughbred is named in honor of Estela Casas, a news anchor for El Paso ABC affiliate KVIA-TV Channel 7, and her year- long journey with bilateral breast cancer.
J & SM Inc. of Fort Stockton, Texas, purchased Stells Bold Journey, a full brother to multiple New Mexico-bred stakes winner Stormin The Jewels.
Stells Bold Journey was prepped by A & A Ranch, a full-service facility located in Anthony, New Mexico, and run by Fred and Linda Alexander. Fred
Alexander told KVIA-TV that he expects the colt to be a stakes winner, just like his brother.
“He has a good transmission and motor,” Alexander said. “He has strong and beautiful hips and shoulders.”
Dick said he expects a lot from Stells Bold Journey because of his pedigree. He said his horse has a message of hope.
“Stells Bold Journey is like you,” he said to Estela Casas. “You’ve made it. You’re cancer-free so far.”
The Stand With Estella Fund provides support for a variety of things, like transportation for cancer patients to
and from their chemotherapy, wigs, and compression sleeves.
