they also ask questions, listen to the answers and make every effort they can to learn the business. They’ve come a long way in less than five years.”
Big Daddy Cartel is also a relative newcomer, with only five crops and three to race. Owned by MJ, he has 173 performing foals that have accounted for 127 wins and 73 winners. Six are stakes winners and nine are stakes-placers, with a total of $3.2-million in progeny earnings. The leader of the pack is Bigg Daddy with $749,000.
Standing as the sire of the second highest seller will no doubt help Big Daddy Cartel march even higher up the ladder.
Big Big Love has an outstanding bottom side with just one rather obvious weakness
– Desperate Love, the colt’s dam, is unraced and this is her first foal. In other words, the four-year-old mare hasn’t had enough time to accumulate a portfolio. That, however, in no way alters the impressive support coming from the mare’s first and second dams.
Remember Me Rose, the dam of Desperate Rose, retired at four with seven wins and $821,000. She bagged the Ruidoso Derby, the Sunland Park Winter Futurity and the Texas Classic Futurity, among others. She’s produced 12 foals to race, and all 12 are ROM. They include stakes winner Tessta Rossa and stakes- placers The Revenant, Remember To Dash and Jabulani. It’s also Remember Me Rose who makes Big Big Love a double-bred Corona Cartel.
Im Moonlighting by Zevi TB, Big Big Love’s third dam, adds heavily to the black type mix.
Third High Seller: Hip 182, $60,000 PERRYS REGARD, colt,
(Chicks Regard-Ms Perry Mason,
Mr Jess Perry)
• Cosigned by: Double LL Farms • Purchased by: Ted Zrzavy
Mike Abraham, the breeder of Perrys Regard, is a well-known name in New Mexico’s racing circles. With a powerful band of broodmares, he’s dedicated to the continued development and improvement of New Mexico racing....
which is one of the reasons he’s established such a close working relationship with W.L. Mooring.
“Oh, sure, we argue sometimes,” said Mooring with a chuckle, “but, overall, we
work really well together. We’re always trying
to pinpoint which mares work best on which stallions. It took a while, but I finally convinced Mike of the benefits of trying these mares on different stallions until we determine which cross gives the best results most of the time.”
And, in this business, the best anyone can hope and pray for is most of the time.
Perrys Regard is a good-looking gray colt; his color standing as a testament to his Chicks Beduino/Beduino TB heritage.
The legendary Blane Schvaneveldt, who stood Chicks Beduino until the stallion’s death, bred Chicks Regard. Today, the 1999 stallion stands
at Bar Y Equine in New Mexico and is owned by Killer Humberto Lopez Gaxiola in Arizona.
Chicks Regard ran his last race in 2003 and, while he acquitted himself admirably with a 107 si and six wins from 13 starts, he accumulated only $52,693. He’s sent 12 crops postward with 260 performing foals. When all the numbers
are figured, they come out looking pretty good. Total progeny earnings tally out at $6,924,361. If we convert that into an average per starter,
we see $26,632. He has 146 winners, 17 stakes winners and 19 stakes-placers. His all-time leading money earner is Regard With Respect with slightly more than one-half million dollars.
Backing up Perrys Regard from the bottom is his dam Ms Perry Mason, who is by Mr Jess Perry and out of Sound Reward by Super Sound Charge. Interestingly, the majority of these names belong to some of the “older,” established lines. Why is the word “older” set apart in quotes? Because there are many, many of us who remember those “older” names when they were first introduced to the QH racing industry and certainly don’t feel as if it was that long ago!
The second dam, Sound Reward, is a sister to stakes winner Life Styles.
The third dam, Juno Reward, is where racing history pops loose. Juno Reward is the mother of stakes winner Lady Juno by the Thoroughbred Master Hand. And Lady
Juno just doesn’t quit. She was an AQHA Champion Aged Mare, winning the Champion of Champions. Lady Juno is the grandam of Western Heart, My Dashing Lady, who was Broodmare of the Year; dam of stakes winner and Champions Noconi and Brenda Beautiful, and stakes winners Sixy Lady and Ketel Won, Champion 2 Year Old. And, just for the heck of it, let’s throw in the names of stakes winners Life Styles and Hi Tiffy.
Perrys Regard could become downright explosive when all that mitochondrial DNA kicks into the gray colt!
The enthusiasm and the success stories didn’t stop with the TB and QH yearling sessions. They rippled and boiled over into Lowell Neumeyer’s second New Mexico-Bred QH Foal In-Utero sale. The venue included hips 212 through 236 on August 18.
The horse business has always been intriguing. There’s always a hint of mystery flavoring the sometimes ribald, sometimes poignant and sometimes heroic stories thrown into the air by the pounding hooves of the “short horses.” And now, with advancing reproductive technology, some of the contemporary stories take on a hint of science fiction.
Case in point: The high seller ($65,000) in the In-Utero portion of the sale.
It was number 225. There was no name since, after all, it’s still in the mare’s belly. The expected due date is February 19, 2019. The dam is Five Bar Molly, a 1998 model by Dash Ta Fame, the stallion that left an indelible mark at MJ Farms. Dash Ta Fame’s sire was First Down Dash.
Why was the dam’s name given first? Usually, it’s the stallion who takes that position. Because, in this case, that’s the best way to make the sire’s name a surprise.
It’s Special Effort, the QH industry’s first, and only, Triple Crown winner in 1981.
New Mexico-Bred QH Foal In-Utero Sale
Even the in-utero session, first introduced by Lowell Neumayer last year, skyrocketed. The average fell just shy of $20,000. The leader on the list was an embryo by Special Effort and out of the champion producer Five Bar Molly, selling to Joe D. Brooks for $65,000.
