Nancy Sorick Earns Highest Honor from Sun Downs
by Ginny Harding
Nancy Sorick (center-right) holds the crystal Achievement Award presented by Sun Downs and Tri-City Horseracing for her 30 years of dedication to the horsemen of our industry. This is the first time the award has ever been given and will always bear her name in the future.
Managing the Tri-City Horse Racing group at Sun Downs takes more than hard work. It takes a passion for the sport and for the equine athletes, the stars of the race meet that over the years has been reduced to only three weekends in the spring. But unlike the other three Class C tracks in Washington State, Sun Downs
has thrived year after year thanks to the small dedicated group headed by President/Manager/ Executive Secretary, Nancy Sorick.
This personable and beautiful white-haired lady has single-handedly faced all opposition in keeping this group up and running, along with horse racing in the Eastern Washington town of Kennewick. Backside, kitchen, parimutuel
windows, track, grandstands, programs, rest- rooms, and literally an endless list of respon- sibilities has been met with an energy and passion seen in very few individuals. Nobody can refuse when “Fancy Nancy” calls for a little help, and they gladly give it any way they can—they know if they don’t, little Nancy will be out there all alone doing it herself!
This honor, given after a race named for Nancy Sorick and Charlie Landells (her racing steward husband of 40 years who passed away just weeks ago) was a small token indeed in comparison for 30 years of dedication. The immeasurable love and respect that comes with it is the greatest token of all.
Nancy Sorick presents Ginny Harding with the Northern Racing Quarter Horse Association 2014 Director’s Award.
