Jenuine Joy & jess Send Candy
by Sue Zuber
The vision and foresight paved the way for two mares to share the title of Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year
   Fredda and the late Carl Draper, and the late Carl Pevehouse played an integral role in the accomplishments of 2016 Speedhorse Co- Broodmares of the Year Jenuine Joy and Jess Send Candy. While both men passed away before the honor was bestowed, the Draper and Pevehouse families are witnessing the immense p o w e r o f t h e s e m a r e s t h a t a r e a l i v i n g t e s t a m e n t to the legacies of these great horsemen.

Draper trained the stallion from 1992 to 1994 and watched him finish in the top three in nine of 14 starts. His $73,131 bankroll was built by several stakes appearances, including a

A multiple Grade 1 finalist, Super Duper Couper was sired by the Thoroughbred Coup De Kas, a fact that started the Drapers’ fondness for utilizing Coup De Kas-bred mares in their breeding program. In 1998, they saw a daughter of Super Duper Couper they liked, and they purchased Super Perla Negra as a yearling.
While not as productive on the racetrack as her sire was, Super Perla Negra was a respectable runner with a top speed index of 101. She finished first, second or third in 14 of 34 career starts, earning $41,278 primarily in claiming and allowance company. Her real value, though, came later, as a broodmare.
“We bred Super Perla Negra to Genuine Strawfly, another horse we owned a part of, and that is how we got Jenuine Joy, the dam of Imperial Eagle,” Fredda told Larry Thornton

“She just reared straight up when the starter kicked the button, and when she came back down, the rest of the field was off and gone,” Draper told Cusortelli. “The rider just took a hold of her and galloped her to the finish.
