by Diane Rice A positive attitude, mental toughness and passion for all he does keeps James “Doc” Streelman in
the upper echelon of Quarter Horse racing.
Denny Boer, who co-founded Dutch Masters III, and their trainer Jaime Gomez.
According to his partner of 10 years, Bill Dale of Dales’ Running Quarter Ranch in Clinton, Missouri, there was a time when James Streelman, M.D., co-founder of the renowned Dutch Masters III partnership, didn’t look like he’d live another week.
“With all the health problems he’s had, including a heart transplant, he’s still fun- loving and full of life,” Bill says. “You’d never know he’s gone through anything. He doesn’t complain. He just keeps taking a step forward and moving ahead. He’s got a positive attitude and he’s tough. He enjoys life and having his kids around. He’s going to live life until the day they bury him.”
Indeed, Doc Streelman lives his life. Along with his career as a, now semi-retired, family physician, he has amassed an admirable racing record, including multiple leading breeder and leading owner titles and a 2017 Ruidoso Racehorse Hall of Fame induction. He’s also an avid golfer, enjoys movies, reading and is active in his church. And, most of all, he’s involved with his family, especially his 10 grandchildren. “They all love their Poppa,” he says fondly.
