   Heritage Fall Mixed Sale Adds A Day
On September 19, Heritage Place Director of Operations Spence Kidney told Speedhorse that the Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale, originally scheduled for Nov. 2-3, has been extended by one day. The Fall Mixed Sale will start on Thursday, Nov. 1, and run through Saturday, Nov. 3. The extra day was added when more than 700 head were consigned to the 34th annual event in Oklahoma City.
In addition to the usual good selection
of weanlings, yearlings, horses of racing age, broodmares, stallions and stallion prospects, this year’s Fall Mixed Sale will also feature a major consignment offered through the United States Department of the Treasury’s Seized & Forfeited General Property Program. Kidney said he expected the full list of horses to be offered in the sale to be available on the Heritage Place website (www.heritageplace.com) in early October. He also indicated that the horses consigned by the Treasury Department will be spread throughout the catalog of the three-day sale.
On the evening preceding the sale, a pre- sale party will begin at 5:00 p.m., followed
at 6:00 p.m. by the 2nd annual A Night
With The Legends of American Quarter Horse Racing, which will feature retired jockeys Bobby Adair, Danny Cardoza, Jerry Nicodemus, Charley Smith, Don Allison, Kenny Hart, Curt Perner, Tomey Swan, Jerry Burgess, James Lackey and Tami Purcell. G.R. Carter Jr., American Quarter Horse racing’s all-time leading rider, will emcee the event.
Before the sale on Nov. 1, an exclusive offering of vintage American Quarter Horse art will feature an original painting by American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Orren Mixer of Barbara L and Miss Meyers. The two mares featured in the four horse painting are members of the AQHA Hall Of Fame and were owned by A. B. Green of Purcell, Oklahoma. Also selling Friday morning will be the No. 1 bronze of AQHA Hall of Fame racehorse Easy Jet, done by sculptor Don Hersberger, and a painting of AQHA Hall of Fame racehorse Special Effort by artist Suzanne Wamsley.
APHA Masterpiece Racing Challenge
The American Paint Horse Association
on Sept. 6 announced the qualifiers to the inaugural Masterpiece Racing Challenge, to be held at Lone Star Park on Nov. 3. The qualify- ing horses are Big Red Sunset, CRM Livewire, Flashthechicks, Rawhide Legend, Spotless Redneck and SW Eye Candy. The Masterpiece Racing Challenge provides added incentives for owners of 3-year-old Paints and Appaloosas, and features nine qualifying races in Canada, Idaho, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. The
Louisiana Racing Commission To Meet On Dermorphin Cases
According to a Sept. 11 article in The Times- Picayune, The Louisiana State Racing Commission on Sept. 27-28 is set to hear cases for 11 alleged Class 1 dermorphin violations against Quarter Horse trainers Steve Garrison, Gonzalo Gonzales, Alonzo Loya, Alvin Smith, Jr., Darrel Soileau (two viola- tions) and Heath Taylor, and Thoroughbred trainers Anthony Agilar (two violations), Keith Charles and Kyi Lormand. Nine of the 11 horses that tested positive won their race and the two others finished second. They were disqualified and the purses re-distributed in each of the violations. The trainers were given the maximum six-month suspension that a steward in the state can give, and then the stewards referred the cases to the commission for further action. The recommended penalty for a Class 1 violation under Louisiana rules is a suspension of between one- and five-years and a $5,000 fine.
The Downs At Albuquerque Cuts Stakes Races
According to the Albuquerque Journal, the Downs at Albuquerque has cut six stakes races from its 2012 schedule. Five of the stakes are for Thoroughbreds, while the other is the $25,000 La Mariposa Handicap for Quarter Horses that was to run Sept. 16. Racing manager Don Cook said live racing is the worst he’s ever seen, citing shrinking casino revenue, not enough entries to fill the live card, and less betting on the races. AQHA Foundation Scholarship
The American Quarter Horse Foundation 2013 scholarship applications are now available online at www.aqha.com/foundation, or by calling (806) 378-5040. The scholarships are based on academic merit, financial need, AQHA involve- ment, leadership and communication skills. They provide financial assistance to members of the AQHA and AQHYA through general, racing, career path and state or regional scholarships. Applications must be postmarked by Dec. 1, 2012.
Priddy Posthumously Honored With White Horse Award
The late Michael Priddy will be honored with the Race Track Chaplaincy of America (RTCA) 2012 White Horse Award. According to an RTCA release, the Remington Park maintenance worker died of injuries when a horse bolted from the starting gates on March 4 and ran toward the track gate that leads to the barn area. Priddy had just closed the gate and was trying to prevent the horse from crashing through when the horse ran into him. His wife Cheri and 9-year-old daughter Elizabeth will accept the award at a luncheon at Santa Anita Park on Nov. 1.

 Ingredients:
1 C. cornmeal
1 t. salt
1 t. baking powder 2 T. oil
1 C. buttermilk
1 jalapeno
3 oz. cheddar cheese 5 T. flour
1/2 t. baking soda
3 t. sugar
1 egg
1 small onion
3 oz. bacon
From The Kitchen of:
Savory & Spicy Cornbread
Glenn Blodget t, DVM, 6666 Ranch
Finely mince onion and jalapeno. Cook bacon in cast iron skillet until brown & crispy, drain on paper towel. Cook onion & jalapeno until onions are translucent. Do not clean out skillet.
Mix cornmeal with flour, sugar, baking power, baking soda & salt. Stir in egg and oil, pour in buttermilk. Stir until just moistened. Fold in onions, jalapeno, crumbled bacon & cheese. Pour into greased skil- let. Cook 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees.
