The modern era of Quarter Horse racing started in the 1940’s with the formation
of the American Quarter Racing Association. This association formed to give quarter racing a governing body, providing horsemen a place to race and then keep records verifying the races that took place. The AQRA eventually became the racing division of the American Quarter Horse Association, making the AQHA the governing body for Quarter Horse racing.
The growth and development of quarter racing that started in the 1940’s got a big boost in the 1950’s from stallions like Three Bars, Leo, Top Deck and Depth Charge coming into the picture. They would all have AQHA Hall of Fame careers as sires. But before these stallions entered the picture, a Cajun-Bred stallion named Flying Bob was christened as the leading sire of running Quarter Horses in the old American Quarter Racing Association. He sired more racing Register of Merit runners and winners than any other stallion in the 1940’s. Flying Bob is a notable example of how the Cajun-Bred runners have influenced Quarter Horse racing as we know it today.
The development of the Cajun-Bred Running Horse had its beginning with the first settlements of Louisiana, going all the way back to the first Spanish Conquistadors introducing horses to the continent. This

the continent. This allowed the indigenous Indians, such as the Attakapas Indians, to develop into horsemen with herds of cattle and horses. Then the settlement of parts of Louisiana around New Orleans by the French gave the region a French influence.
The next influx of settlers we will introduce came in the mid 1700’s - the French Acadians from the Canadian
