This issue focuses on the
Freshman Sires of 2013, with a look
back at last year’s Leading Freshman Sire, One Famous
Eagle. Breeders make note of leading Freshman, 2nd-Year and 3rd-Year sires because the first crops to race in any young stallion’s siring career can be an indication as to how they will do as the years go on.
Last year it was One Famous Eagle leading the boards. In 2011,
it was Ivory James; in 2010 it was PYC Paint Your Wagon; in 2009
it was Brookstone Bay; in 2008 Stel Corona; in 2007 Southern Cartel; in 2006 Check Him Out; in 2005 Walk Thru Fire; in 2004 Separatist; and in 2003 it was Okey Dokey Dale. The list goes on, but it’s clear that having a stellar Freshman season at stud can effect the future siring ability of these young stallions.
Becoming a leading Freshman Sire can boil down to having a few incredible runners, or could ultimately depend on how many mares were bred that first year. Therefore, 2nd- and 3rd-Year Leading Sire statistics can be just as important to consider.
The 2013 two-year-old racing season is just beginning, and we’ll continue to keep you posted by reporting on these young sires through our leading sire lists.
