SH: How did you get involved in Quarter Horse racing?
Dawn: We had absolutely no involvement in racing when we were young. It wasn’t until Dad started going to the races with his buddy, Russ Lovingier, and got completely hooked on racing in the late 1980s that we got involved. We were city girls hanging out at the beach and didn’t know a horse from a hole in the ground!
SH: Do you have any favorite memories from those early years?
Dawn: I’ll never forget the first race we went to with Itsafamlytradition (Dad’s very first horse) at Hollywood Park. We were all dressed up and ready to win. Rarely did our dad do something and not succeed at it, so we knew we would win. Well, the agony of defeat was as hard to take then as it is today! We learned that
lesson quick and none of us liked it, especially Dad. We started going to the races more and more, because he bought more and more horses! I think his determination to win at this sport took over and he was going to figure out how to do it right no matter what. He was stubborn like that. When his mind was set, it was set, period!
