Federal Authorities Arrest Seven In Money Laundering Conspiracy
On June 12, 2012, federal authorities implemented a multi-faceted raid at several ranches and racetracks in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and California, arresting seven people in connection with a money laundering conspiracy using proceeds derived from the sale of drugs by the Los Zetas drug cartel. Among those arrested were Jose and Zulema Trevino, of Tremor Enterprises, and trainers Adan Farias, Felipe Quintero and Eusevio Huitron.
The federal grand jury’s indictment charges 14 defendants including Los Zetas leader Miguel Angel Trevino Morales (aka “40”) and his brothers, Oscar Omar Trevino Morales
(aka “42”) and Jose Trevino Morales, with
one count of conspiracy to launder monetary instruments. According to an announce-
ment made by United States Attorney Robert Pitman, Richard Weber, Chief, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Armando Fernandez and Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent in Charge Javier Pena, federal authorities arrested Jose Trevino-Morales and his wife, Zulema Trevino, in Lexington, Oklahoma; Fernando Solis Garcia in Ruidoso, New Mexico; Carlos Miguel Nayen Borbolla in Los Angeles, California; and trainers Adan Farias and Felipe Alejandro Quintero in Los Angeles, California, and Eusevio Maldonado Huitron in Austin, Texas. All seven remain in federal custody. Miguel Angel Trevino Morales and Oscar Omar Trevino Morales are believed to be in Mexico. Other individuals indicted, but not yet arrested, include: Raul Ramirez of El Paso, Texas ; Francisco Antonio Colorado Cessa
of Veracruz, Mexico; Victor Manuel Lopez
of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico; Sergio Rogelio Guerrero Rincon of Mexico; and, Luis Gerardo Aguirre of Mexico.
According to the indictment, the Los Zetas are a powerful drug cartel operating out of Mexico and funneling thousands of kilos of cocaine and other illegal narcotics into the United States each year. Los Zetas are the largest drug cartel in Mexico in geographical presence and control 11 states within Mexico. Their drug trafficking results in multi-million dollar revenues. The indictment alleges that since 2008, Miguel and Oscar Trevino Morales would direct portions of the bulk cash gener- ated from the sale of illegal narcotics to Jose and Zulema Trevino to run a Quarter Horse racing operation. Millions of dollars worth of transactions were identified involving a large number of quarter horses, with the Trevinos and others acting as “front” companies to
Jose and Zulema Trevino
conceal the true ownership of the horses. Jose and Zulema Trevino, who raced
horses under the name of Tremor Enterprises and 66 Land, recently opened Zule Farms, in Lexington, Oklahoma, which was one of the major focuses of federal agents on June 12. The indictment seeks the forfeiture of numerous Quarter Horses including the stallions Mr Piloto, the 2009 All American winner who stood at Zule Farms, and Tempting Dash, which stood at Southwest Stallion Station, 2011 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Separate
Fire, and broodmares Dashin Follies and her daughter, Coronita Cartel, to name just a few. Furthermore, the indictment seeks the forfei- ture of farm and ranch equipment, horse racing equipment, property in Lexington, Oklahoma, and Bastrop County, Texas, and funds con- tained in three bank accounts allegedly used in the defendants’ scheme. The indictment also seeks a monetary judgment of $20 million. Upon conviction, the defendants face up to 20 years in federal prison. All of the defendants remain in federal custody as of June 13.
The continuing investigation is being conducted by agents with the Federal
Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration with assistance from the United States Marshals Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Securities Investigations (ICE-HSI), and U.S. Border Patrol.
