PAINTED LIES
by Stacy Pigott
Painted Lies ran his win streak to three with a neck victory in the $17,150 Minnesota Stallion Breeders NCQHRA Derby on June 9 at Canterbury
Park. It was the first stakes win for the gelding, who has performed well at Canterbury in the past with
a third-place finish in the Northlands Futurity-G3 last year.
Trained by Amber Blair, Painted Lies started his winning streak on May 10, when he won an allow- ance race at Remington Park. Moving to Canterbury, Painted Lies then won a derby trial by a half-length, setting the top qualifying time for the finals.
Ridden by Cody Smith, Painted Lies was
equally as strong in the Minnesota Stallion Breeders NCQHRA Derby. The PYC Paint Your Wagon geld- ing broke with the leaders and steadily improved his position, winning with a 400-yard time of :20.339. He has now won five starts and earned $108,883 in his career.
Owned by Tom Maher and bred by Bob Moore Farms, Painted Lies is the first stakes winner for his dam, Teller Lies. His second dam is multiple Grade 1 stakes winner Teller Queen.
Runner-up Feature Dreamgirl (Feature Mr Jess- Allamericandreamgirl) competed in her first stakes race for owner David Wisdom. Ed Hardy trains the filly, who was ridden by Nik Goodwin.
Fred Pelzer’s Explosive Guns (Zoomin For Bux- Garters N Guns) was third under Jeramie Fennell. Shane Miller saddled the gelding.
The top three were followed by Streak N Hot (Hotdoggin-Streak N Sierra), Colosso (Corona Czech-Splash N The Moon), Ivory Celebration (Ivory James-Feefees Celebration), Beautys Prince (Afterallitsme-The Beauty), Western Fun (Tres Seis- Southern Fun) and Whiz Happens (Chick Happens- Brandi Whiz). IQHRA Dash For Cash Stakes
FIVE STAR CARTEL
by Tracy Gantz
Five Star Cartel hadn’t attempted anything as short as the 250-yard IQHRA Dash For Cash Stakes since his racing debut in 2009, when he finished
fifth. In his next try over 250 yards, he not only won, he broke the Fairmount Park track record.
Though the three outside horses were involved
in a bit of bumping at the start, they outfinished the rest of the field. Five Star Cartel and jockey Rafael Hernandez veered out slightly from post eight while Bold Badon came in, with RK Quick Version in the middle. Five Star Cartel bounded to the front and won easily by 1 3/4 lengths. Bold Badon raced on the outside rail, a dryer part of the track, and finished second over RK Quick Version.
Five Star Cartel, who had won the Tom Tucker Memorial Stakes at Fairmount in his previous
start, raced the 250 yards in :13.252. That broke Iamalivingdoll’s previous record of :13.514 set in 2002. He is trained by Frank Randazzo Jr. for owner Blas Juarez Sr.
C.D. Kemp bred Five Star Cartel from unraced These Eyes. The mare has produced two winners in three starters, with Five Star Cartel her first stakes winner.
Ceasar Carrillo piloted the 6-year-old gelding Bold Badon (Dale Badon-Darbs Doll) for owner Fransisco Ramos and trainer Raul Gonzalez.
RK Quick Version (Latest Version-Quick Take), an allowance-winning 4-year-old filly, races for owner Carol Sheppard, with Randy Smith the trainer. Keith Austin rode her.
Completing the field were Tortuga Tony
(Stel Corona-Just Wanna Be Me), Freaking (TR Dasher-Chickasis), RK Lady Prospect (Coronas Prospect-Fastest Flying Nanny), Doctor Onaka (Sean Roy-Mind All Mind), Jessgonnafly (Fly Jess Fly-Toast To Gypsy), Blood Red Cadillac (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Hanna B Jazzin), and Iama PYC (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Iama Eye Opener).
Ivan Ashment Handicap
CLASSIC SASSY CHECK
by Tracy Gantz
Classic Sassy Check may be a former claimer, but with her Los Alamitos connections, it isn’t sur- prising that she would ultimately win a stakes there,
which she did in the June 9 Ivan Ashment Handicap. Not only were Classic Sassy Check’s sire and dam both major winners at the track, she began her career for Dr. Ed Allred, who runs Los Alamitos.
The break made all the difference in the Ashment. Classic Sassy Check threw her head a couple of times, but jockey Cruz Mendez had her in perfect position when the gate opened. Favored Getit Together had her head turned at the break and got away slowly. Classic Sassy Check flew to the lead, and won by three-quarters of a length.
Allred purchased Classic Sassy Check for $15,000 from the Burns Ranch consignment at the 2009 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. She eventually broke her maiden at age 3 in a $2,500 claiming race, in which she was claimed. Owner Jose Uranga and trainer Jose Moreno haltered Classic Sassy Check two starts later for $3,200, and she finished second in the Miss Princess Handicap-G3 in her next start.
Anna and Rod MacPherson bred Classic Sassy Check in California. Her dam, Classic Sassy Chic, won such stakes as the AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G1, in which she set a world record for 350 yards. Classic Sassy Chic has produced five winners from seven starters.
Getit Together (Separatist-Seronka) and jockey Oscar Peinado outfinished Oh La Traffic (Hawkish- Coupers First Dash) and Rodrigo Aceves for second. Dan Francisco trains Getit Together for owner-breeder Mimi Wells. Oh La Traffic, a stakes winner in 2010, races for owner Stan Young and trainer Bret Vickery.
Completing the field were Alota Action (Quick Action-TB-Alota Traffic), OC City Girl (First Down Dash-Shirleys Strawfly), and Shes Worth A Kiss (First Down Dash-Kissing Effort).
