Mexico Futurity-RG3
BR CHIVALI CHAMP

From the 20 trials held between April 17 and 18, the 10 finalists were chosen for the Mexico Futurity-RG3. There were 170 horses
raised in Mexico registered to the race, all part of the 615 yearlings that were once catalogued in the sale book for the 2020 Select Yearling Auction Sale, and although the sale was not held due to the COVID 19 pandemic, they remained eligible for the futurities and derbies scheduled.
Of the 170 enrolled, only 161 ran in the trials, where they traveled the 250 yards. BR Chivali Champ positioned himself as the fast- est of the participants with a time of :12.960, followed by Cartel Elegante in :12.978 and AG Navigating Steph in :13.040.
It should be mentioned that this is the first futurity of the season for Mexican two year olds, where Rancho El Suspiro and Cuadra Baldeli had two horses each in the finals which was run on May 9.
The race was not clean, but favorite BR Chivali Champ escaped the gates easily, mov- ing diagonally on the track that began from his #1 starting position to finish near the opposite end of the group, but without interfering with any and showing great superiority to win the race by 2 1/4-lengths advantage over his near- est pursuer, Acapulco Cartel, who departed from gate #8. On the other hand, the offenses
committed by El Divo One and JE Megatrón were met with disqualifications from fifth to sixth and eighth to tenth place, respectively.

improved his previous time by
0.29 hundredths of a second
having now scored :12.67 for
a 110 speed index, just .09
hundredths of a second to equalling the World and Track Record of :12.58 held by Allens Cash since 2012. But, BR Chivali Champ’s clocking is a stakes record for the Mexico Futurity and likely for any two year old in the history of the Hipodromo de las Americas.
The bay colt was born on Jan. 8, 2019, and is the son of the stallion Southern Corona and out of the mare Chivali Go (by Gone to The Man). He was bred by Maximiliano Pérez Castañeda, also owner of the Cuadra Bronco Rider, in the name of which he runs. The colt was trained by Liderme René Gómez Díaz, although the race preparation is the responsibil- ity of his jockey José Roberto Durán, who also qualified him in race nine of the April 17 trials
from the #5 gate. His photo was posted in the Speedhorse Future Stakes Winner section in the May 2019 issue.
The stallion Southern Corona is the sire of 17 classic winners, the vast majority of them in the United States, with earnings already past $5 million dollars. BR Chivali Champ is his main winner in Mexico,
as the earnings obtained in
the Mexico Futurity-RG3
added $1,593,638 pesos (approx. $79,075 U.S.)
to his account. He is also the sire of BR Centauro Del Sur, winner of $12,346 (Carlos A. Sosa Valencia Classic and finalist in the Mexican Breeders Futurity) and those placed in classics: BR Corona De Chivali and BR Chivali South, both full brothers of the new stakes winner, and BR Bambino and Sassa Corona.
The sire crossed with the mare Chivali Go to produce the winner of a major futurity in Mexico. To the list above we have to add BR Jesse (by Southern Corona), who on the same day won the Mexico Futurity Consolation also outlined here in this issue.
As statistical data, the Mexico Futurity-RG3 raised funds of $5,032,500 pesos (approx. $249,707 U.S.), of which $3,794,375 pesos were earmarked to reward the finalists (approx. $79,075 U.S.), which corresponds to 75% of the total; the difference is distributed among the finalists’ breeders (9%), the consolation race purse (6%) and organizational expenses of the Mexicana Quarter Mile Association (10%).
Acapulco Cartel (Danny Cartel-One Cool) and jockey Eddi Cuéllar Soriano finished in second. He is owned by the Cuadra Baldeli, was saddled by Ismael Ayala and bred by Cuadra La Presita.
Third place went to JE Deja Vu Risk (Jabulani-Chick At Risk) with Juan Diego Marquez in the saddle. He belongs to the Cuadra H-R, is trained by Ismael Ayala and his breeder is Jesús Sánchez Isidoro.
After the above disqualifications, the other positions remained as follows: AG Navigating Steph (Jess Navigating-JLS Shezalittlesteph), Sea Jack (Sea Horse Corona-Cause I Know Jack), El Divo One (Bullish One-CY Diva Prospect), La Chamulita (Bullish One-La Paz), Cartel Regio (Danny Cartel-Eye Teller), Cartel Elegante (Danny Cartel-Elegant Zevi) and JE Megatron (Royal Invader-Sharapova).
