The Kirk breeding program used Cowboy P-12 and Erskine Dale in their breeding program.
Jack Dempsey sired some good runners, but his true contributions come through his daughters as producers. One of those mares
is Hazel D and she has an interesting role in the perpetuation of the Kirk bred horses and their influence on the modern Quarter Horse. She is the dam of the ROM runner Play Girl D, who was sixth in the 1949 New Mexico State Fair Futurity. Hazel D is also the dam of a horse named Jack D by Kentucky Cardinal and he is the sire of a mare named Lue Kirk, who was bred by Lou Kirk.
When we delve into the pedigree of Lue Kirk, we find several versions of her pedigree again, as the AQHA has one pedigree, the National Quarter Horse Breeders Association has a second version, and Nelson Nye in
his famous book Champions of the Quarter Track has the third version. The AQHA
and NQHBA have her sire as Jack D. The AQHA pedigree for Lue Kirk shows that
her dam is Babe Lux by Bubbling Over by Rainy Day by Lone Star. The dam of Babe Lux in this version is Red Wing by Billy
and her dam is Chicken. The Billy in this version is sired by Columbus by Silver Dick. The NQHBA pedigree lists her dam as Baby
Luck by Jack Dempsey. Baby Luck being one of the runners sired by Jack Dempsey that was ridden by Lou Kirk. Nelson Nye indicated that her sire is Bubbling Over, and her dam is Lady Luck by Jack Dempsey.
Lue Kirk was a Register of Merit race mare with 10 official starts including one win, two seconds and two thirds. The produce record for Lue Kirk shows that she is the taproot mare of a line of mares that has had success influencing some of our runners from the 1960’s to today. She became the dam of the ROM racehorses Iron Maiden by Iron Bar, and Louie Kirk by Pleasure Fund. Miss Lou Dandy, who was out of Lue Kirk, was the dam of Miss Louton, the 1958 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly and the 1959 Champion Mare and Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. Miss Louton is the dam of Camptown Girl, who is
the dam of the legend Town Policy – the 1977 Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding and Champion Gelding; the 1978 Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding; and the 1980 Champion Aged Gelding.
Sid Vail, the owner of Three Bars, eventually owned Lue Kirk. When bred to Three Bars, she produced Lady Lou Bar. This mare had 12 starts with only three seconds on her record. She was
bred to Top Deck to produce Lou Deck, who produced Lou Etta Deck when bred to Chicks Etta Deck. Lou Etta Deck produced Tiny Lou Etta when bred to Tiny’s Gay. Tiny Lou Etta produced To Hot To Hug when bred to Six Fols. To Hot To Hug produced Hot Cash 123 by Takin On The Cash. Hot Cash 123 is
the dam of 15 starters with 11 ROM and four stakes winners. Her stakes winners include Cold Cash 123, the 2011 World Champion, Champion 3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding; Flying Cowboy 123, the 2018 Champion 2-Year- Old Colt; and I Do One Two Three, the 2010 APHA World Champion, Champion 3 Year Old, and Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding, and the 2009 APHA Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding; and her fourth stakes winner is Tough Dynasty 123, winner of the 2017 Rainbow Juvenile.
The next interesting contribution of Jack Dempsey comes from his daughter Mame Taylor, who is probably known as the most successful of the Jack Dempsey mares. She was bred by the senior Kirk and she was given to Lou. Her dam is Red Cloud by Tex and Red Cloud is out of Headlight, the foundation mare for the Kirk’s breeding program.
