Premio Alberto Gómez Gutiérrez
CHEETAH POPPY
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
Awell-deserved tribute to Alberto Gómez Gutiérrez, who died on March 25, 2021, was paid to him through this race, in the pres- ence of his wife Guadalupe Cortés, and his chil- dren Diego Eduardo and Ana Gómez Cortés. A summary of Alberto’s extensive and productive career in the field of equestrian information and communication was published in Speedhorse last May (page 152).
In recognition of him, the AMCCCCM and the Hipodromo de las Americas summoned to this race three-year-old and older horses born
in Mexico who have never won, which was contested by 10 participants to obtain the main part of the purse of $153,300 pesos ($7,634 U.S. approx.) over a distance of 300 yards.
The entry of the Cuadra Chilano, formed by BR Corona Secreta and BR Peregrina, was preferred in the bets, followed by BR Chamaco, which runs for the Cuadra Sara.
The break was clean for everyone, until a few yards were covered when the colt BR Chamaco, who started from position #6, swerved inward and impacted SE He Corona, which cost him a disqualification from third to fifth place. The rest of the competition went well, with the colt Cheetah Poppy taking advantage of his good position to move freely through the center of the track and easily prevail by 2-lengths with a time of :15.22 (SI 88) under the direction of Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez García.
Prior to the race, a posthumous tribute was made to Alberto Gómez Gutiérrez in the
winner’s circle in the presence of his relatives already mentioned, who were also special guests at the award ceremony for the winning team.
Four-year-old Cheetah Poppy was bred by Abelardo Gallegos
Fernandez. His sire is the
stallion Cheetah Woods, who
was crossed with mare Poppy Hill (by Ought To Be First). He belongs to Rancho La Soledad de Álvarez, owned by Orlando Álvarez Martínez, who received the correspond- ing trophy from Diego Eduardo Gómez Cortés.
This was the first tri-
umph for Cheetah Poppy
in nine attempts, for which
he received $91,980 pesos
($4,571 U.S. approx.), being the best perfor- mance he has given in his still brief career. He is trained by Adán López Alejandre.
In second place was Tempra (Desirios Lil Cash-Mexican Secret, by Jody O Toole) directed by Yair Daniel Báez Soto. The filly is owned by Rancho Las Gaviotas and was saddled by Víctor Hugo Arias Oropeza.
With the disqualification of BR Chamaco, third place went to Solo Mariz (Senior Solo-In Your Honor, by The Privateer) with Alejandro Almazán in the saddle, adding points to the record of Rancho San Pedro PZH and trainer Gonzalo Bastida Pacheco.
SE He Corona (Fly Jess Fly-Shes All Corona) was fourth and was followed
by BR Chamaco (Southern Corona- Jessaspecialeffort), Taliban Chicks (Allens
Cash-Miss Chicks Perry), SC King Black (SC Built To Fight-Fantastic Runner), DK Solo Jess (Danny Cartel- Sola Shes), BR Corona Secreta (Southern Corona- Down To Separating) and BR Peregrina (Southern Corona–Perrys Winner).
