BR FAVORITO CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The sixth running of this classic, open to two-year-old horses, was held on Sept. 26. Qualifiers ran three weeks before, from which the 10 finalists were obtained. In the trials, it was Island Candy who showed great strength and speed by recording :16.946, the only one who had a time faster than :17:00 for the 350 yards.
With the last-minute scratches of Hiclass And Grand and SE Corona Built, which was not registered, the final was run with eight participants, where the fans favored the afore- mentioned Island Candy and the entries of the Cuadra Bronco Rider, composed of Player X Three and BR Favorito Cartel, the latter being the one who scored the victory and obtained most of the purse, which totaled $1,290,000 pesos ($63,667 U.S. approx.).
It was a competitive group, where BR Favorito Cartel came from behind and responded very well in the final yards to the demands of his jockey Aaron Adrian Gomez, beating the favorite Island Candy in the final yards, to close 1-length in front of Eye Bet You Can. His time was :16.95 (SI 100), significantly improving the :17.12 of his trial.
