Cavenaughs Purchase James Ranch
Don and Fran Cavenaugh have purchased James Ranch in Wayne, Oklahoma, and will rename the facility Cavenaugh Quarter Horses with longtime horseman Mike Turner as farm manager. The Cavenaughs have sent three of their stallions to the ranch for 2021: A Sweet Jess (Apollitical Jess-One Sweet Dash, First Down Dash), Good Candy P (Good Reason SA-Send Me This Wagon, PYC Paint Your Wagon) and Ryder Rite (Favorite Cartel-A Regal Classic, A Regal Choice). All three stallions’ first crop are weanlings of 2022. Their fourth stallion, Champion Uncle D,
will remain at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma. “We are very excited to move our breeding operation to this outstanding facility,” said Fran Cavenaugh on Facebook.
Churchill Downs Inc. Selling Arlington Park
As reported in the Paulick Report, Churchill Downs Inc. (CDI) on Sept. 29 signed a pur- chase and sale agreement with the Chicago Bears of the NFL football league to sell the 326-acre property of Arlington Park Racecourse for $197.2 million. The closing of the sale is subject to closing conditions, but CDI expects the sale to be complete in late 2022/early 2023.
DHS Halts Mass Worksite Immigration Raids
According to the Paulick Report, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
on Oct. 12 directed the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to stop mass worksite raids and to take actions to promote a fair labor market by enforcing wage protections, workplace safety,
and labor rights. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas directed ICE, CBP and USCIS to develop policies to enforce worker protections and to support employment and labor standards against unscrupulous employers. “This is welcome news for the many horse industry businesses and employers, including trainers, who pay close attention to labor laws,” said NTRA President and Chief Executive Officer Alex Waldrop.
LACER Reschedules Stallion Open House
Louisiana Center for Equine Reproduction (LACER) in Opelousas, Louisiana, rescheduled their annual Stallion Open House for Dec. 18. Beginning at noon and ending at 3:00 with a provided lunch, the event will preview their 2022 stallion roster and offer discounted breeding fees on FDD Going Grand, First Prize Doc, Imperial Hint TB, Inseperable, Mr Piloto, The Louisiana Cartel and You Drive I Fly.
AQRA Announced Million Dollar Grant To Enhance Purses
The Arizona Quarter Racing Association (AQRA) has acquired a grant to increase purses over the next several years at Arizona Downs, Rillito and Turf Paradise. Over $1 million in purse increases will be added to the 2021/2022 Turf Paradise meet, which begins Nov. 5, 2021.
David Kendrick was awarded the 1st place scholarship of $3,000.
National Youth Racing Experience
The American Quarter Horse Association hosted five American Quarter Horse Youth Association members during the AQHA National Racing Experience during the Bank of America Challenge Championships at The Downs at Albuquerque on Oct. 21-23. The 2021 National Racing Experience participants were A.J. Kendrick (Texas), Aliya Hawker (Washington), David Kendrick (Texas), Gaston Strickland (Mississippi), and Mallory Robbins (California). The participants received an all-expense paid trip and were matched with a trainer to experience the daily life in a racehorse barn. They also attended informa- tional sessions on various aspects of the racing industry, attended the racing committee meet- ings, and competed for scholarships. Indiana Grand 2022 Dates
The Indiana Horse Racing Commission on Oct. 19 approved the requested dates for the 2022 season at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The 127-day Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred meet will begin April 19 and will run through Nov. 23, with seven cards dedicated to Quarter Horse racing. “We think our 2022 racing
dates will accommodate both our simulcasting patrons and horsemen as well as our on-track racing fans with a few more weekend racing opportunities next season,” said Vice President and General Manager of Racing Eric Halstrom.
Global Symposium On Racing
The University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program will hold their 47th annual Global Symposium on Racing on Dec. 6-8 at Lowes Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, Arizona. U.S. Congressman Thomas Rooney will be the keynote speaker. Among the many topics to be addressed, AQHA chief racing officer Janet VanBebber will be a panelist during the “HISA’s Impact: Observations from the Quarter Horse & Harness Industry” on Dec. 7; and members of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) will be featured in a panel held on Dec. 8.
