The role of the mare’s influence on her sons as sires has been a long-standing subject for Speedlines. It is a topic that goes all the way back to my first contribution to Speedlines in an article titled “Great Sires Have Great Mothers” that appeared in 1984. The goal of the article was to focus in on how a mare can influence the breed through her son or sons. The mares covered were Della Moore, the dam of Joe Reed P-3 and Joe Moore; Quickly, the dam of Depth Charge and Count Fleet; FL Lady Bug,
dam of Lady Bug’s Moon; and Lena’s Bar, dam of Easy Jet. We have profiled a number of stallions that have had an influence on today’s racing American Quarter Horse that reiterates the role of these famous mares as a part of these stallions and their influence on the breed.
Since those days, these four mares made their presence known and the influence of the mare has grown with the advent of modern technology such as embryo transfers which give the mare the opportunity to produce
more than one foal a year. Even though a mare can produce more foals in a year, we still have to keep in mind the role her sons will have on her contribution because of the large number of foals those sons can produce with modern technology. So, we have advanced the mare’s influence through both her daughters and her sons. This brings me to the question at hand—How does a mare influence her foals and especially her sons?
When looking for an example to profile a mare’s influence on her foals and her sons,
