Horseshoe Indiana Declares Meet Leaders
Horseshoe Indianapolis declared their Quarter Horse meet leaders. The 123-day meet ran from April 18 through Nov. 17. The Leading Owners were Jessica Vazquez and Pattie Marshall. Vazquez won eight races with earnings of $123,295, and Marshall also won eight races with earnings of $404,560. The Leading Trainer was Anthony Cunningham with 26 wins and earnings of $1,276,026. The Leading Jockey was Giovani Vazquez- Gomez with 29 wins and $546,981 in earnings. The Leading Horse was two-year-old filly Red Headed Beach (Escondido Beach-Red Storm Flash, Red Storm Cat), owned by Pattie Marshall, with six victories and $365,799 in earnings, including wins in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity, Leader of the Class Sale Futurity and Gordon Mobley Futurity.

Longtime Director of Racing Chris Warren Embarks on New Chapter
According to Martha Claussen, Chris Warren, 64, has served as Director of Racing for Delta Downs and Evangeline Downs, but his last day will be Dec. 15 as he will depart and head home to Ruidoso, New Mexico. He started working as a contractor, carpenter,
and builder, but then his father Bill Warren introduced him to horse racing. He worked summers at Ruidoso Downs and attended
the University of Arizona Racetrack Industry program in Tucson, Arizona. He started as clerk of scales at Santa Anita, and then travelled the
country in various racing office positions. He worked for The Downs at Santa Fe, Canterbury Park, Delta Downs at the age of 22 as assistant racing secretary, and eight years at Delaware Park before returning to Delta Downs in 2001. In Louisiana, he was director of racing, working with horsemen, horsemen’s organizations, attending racing commission meetings, overseeing purses and condition books for Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing, and ensuring racetrack safety. When Boyd Gaming acquired its second track in Louisiana in 2013, Warren was asked to take over the role at Evangeline Downs in addition to Delta Downs. John Simon, currently the racing secretary at Delta Downs, will serve as Director of Racing at the track and Tracey Coonce takes on the same role at Evangeline Downs. Warren will return to his home in Ruidoso with his wife Patricia and their many cats. He has no plans for retirement and hopes to remain in the racing industry in a smaller capacity. “I’m looking forward to regrouping, enjoying the holidays and playing some golf when it gets warmer,” said Warren. “Right now, I have no interest in working full time, but hope to do something to help pay the cat food bill!”
Jockey Robby Bard Passes Away
Jockey Robert Allen “Robby” Bard passed away on Oct. 17 after suffering a heart attack in Louisiana. Racing in the 1980’s, Bard most notable mount was American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame Horse Indigo Illusion, on which he won many races including the Fabergé Special Effort Futurity. Some of his favorite memories were time spent taking his grandson around the farm and seeing the birth of his granddaughter just days before his passing. His love of family extended to his partner Jacque and her daughter and grandchildren. Robby is survived by his three children, partner Jacque, three siblings, grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and many friends and colleagues.
A memorial is planned for Jan. 17, 2024, at Louisiana Downs.
Arizona Horseman Dennis Masteller Passes Away
Funeral services for longtime Arizona horseman and trainer Dennis Len Masteller, 39, will be held Dec. 16 and 17. A loving son, brother, father, grandfather and friend, Masteller was born Nov. 15, 1963, and passed away, Dec. 1, 2023. A Celebration of Life will be conducted after the service.
