Held Sept. 20-22 in Oklahoma City, the Heritage Place Yearling Sale posted increases in average (excluding repur-
chases) and median, while lowering the number of repurchases from last year.
In 2011, a total of 972 horses were cata- loged. That number dropped to 789 horses this year, a decline Heritage Place General Manager Jeff Tebow says is based on the economy.
“If you look back three years ago to where we were at economically, there were a lot of people who didn’t breed their mares. I think that’s why our consignments were down—there just weren’t as many horses out there,” said Tebow. “Our average was up over last year, the median was up, and repurchases were down. We feel like demand for our product has main- tained steady, and breeders and consignors were rewarded for the quality of horses.”
The average excluding repurchases was $13,196, up 4% over last year’s average of $12,656. The median price was a solid $7,500, with only 107 horses repurchased, compared to 157 last year.
The highest seller, at $185,000, was Surging Market, a colt by Corona Cartel out of Champion Mongoose Jet Eye consigned by Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent for Mackie Racing. Jesus Alfredo Soto Jr. purchased the colt, who is a half-brother to stakes winner Madresita and stakes-placed winners Pajarita Sita and Steal Away.
The second-highest seller was Ms First Prize Rose, by Corona Cartel and out of stakes winner First Carolina. Consigned by James Ranch, Agent, Ms First Prize Rose is a sister to stakes winner Denver Pass. Her second dam is Broodmare of the Year First Prize Dash. Johnny Trotter and Burnett Ranches signed the ticket at $170,000.
First Down Dash was the leading sire by average with two or more sold, as three yearlings by First Down Dash averaged $63,833. Corona Cartel was a close second with 13 yearlings selling for an average of $63,769. Mr Jess Perry checked into third with 13 head averaging $44,615.
The increasing prices were accompanied by favorable changes to the Heritage Place facility.
“Over the last five to six years, the board
of directors and the shareholders have really invested a lot of money into the facility,” Tebow added. “We redid the restrooms in the back of the barn area, and I don’t think I’ve ever gotten as many compliments.”
The radiograph repository was also moved from its trailer in the parking lot to a perma- nent room inside the facility.
“This was our second year for the repository, and we certainly feel like it’s here to stay,” said Heritage Place Director of Operations Spence Kidney. “We’re going to offer the repository at all of our sales for the rest of the year, including the Fall Mixed Sale, the Thoroughbred Sale, and the Winter Mixed Sale.”
